Late Heroics Lift Laker Wrestlers to Win

OSWEGO, N.Y. – Senior captain Kyle Sheridan (Syracuse, N.Y.) provided some late heroics at 285 pounds to give the Oswego State wrestling team (1-0) a 21-18 comeback win over visiting RIT (0-1) Saturday afternoon. Sheridan recorded a takedown with four seconds remaining to overtime to defeat Nick Stewart, 3-1.

The final bout became the rubber match after freshman Andrew Cole (Uniondale, N.Y.) pinned Mikhail Solomonik in 1:12 at 197 pounds to tie the dual at 18-all. Solomonik mistimed a takedown attempt that put Cole in perfect position to register the pin, drawing a huge roar from the crowd.

RIT’s Mike Nguyen started the meet with a 7-1 win over Kevin Ramkishun (So., Queens, N.Y.) at 125 pounds before Omar Santiago (Sr., Huntington, N.Y.) leveled the score by defeating Rory Bruce, 9-4. Oswego State’s Mike Gentilcore (Jr., Rochester, N.Y.) registered a technical fall, 18-1, just before the third period ended at 6:48 at 141 pounds against John Hamm.

The Tigers stopped the Lakers’ streak at 149 pounds with an 8-5 decision from Brad Mayville. RIT wont the next two bouts at 157 and 165 pounds. Sean Sercu won 10-6 followed by a pin from Tory Cain in 2:36 to make the score 15-8 in favor of the visitors.

Scott Bova (So., Arlington, N.Y.) regained some momentum for Oswego State at 174 pounds following a 16-6 major decision over Nick Fisk to pull the Lakers within three. RIT’s Adam Hughey registered a 4-0 win at 184 pounds to make the score 18-12 and set up the late drama for the final two bouts.

Next weekend Oswego State will participate in the 44th Annual New York State Collegiate Championships hosted by Cornell.
