Workshop on Self-Publishing Being Offered

FULTON, NY – The CNY Arts Center is presenting a special program for writers who would like to learn more about self-publishing.

The presentation, which will be offered on January 26 from 1 – 4 p.m., will cover the many options available to writers who are looking for alternative methods of having their work published.

“Self-publishing is becoming more accessible to writers,” said Jim Farfaglia, who is the Writing Arts Coordinator for the CNY Arts Center. “Popular books, such as the Chicken Soup For The Soul series and the recent runaway bestseller 50 Shades of Gray, are two examples of books that were self-published, and then caught the eye of a traditional publishing company. Self-publishing is also an excellent option for people who want to create books to share with family and friends or for their own personal use.”

The program, entitled “Is Self-Publishing For You,” will be presented by local author Susan Peterson Gateley.

Gateley has sold more than 6,000 copies of her various titles in hard copy and eBook formats.

She has self-published a dozen books and has compiled and edited several other self-published works.

She recently produced a book on contract for The History Press, a publisher that specializes in regional non-fiction.

Her three-hour program, which includes discussion and Q and A, will cover the basics of self-publishing.

Topics include best self-publishing projects, pros and cons of using Author House, Xlibris and other self-publishing services, working with a short-run printer, using POD (print-on- demand) effectively and eBooks.

Also discussed will be book design, illustration, editing, ISBN, pricing and distribution.

A handout will list sources of further information on the web for future reference.

The CNY Arts Center is located at 357 State St. in the State Street Methodist Church’s annex.

There is a fee for the program.
