Spring 2013 LVOC Tutor Orientation Scheduled

OSWEGO, NY – Oswego County Opportunities’ Literacy Volunteers program is offering a tutor orientation for its 2013 spring session on April 15 from 5 to 8 p.m.

The tutor orientation will be held at OCO’s Midtown Plaza Offices, 75 E. First St.

The orientation session provides an overview of what is expected of tutors and students and the types of literacy services offered at Literacy Volunteers of Oswego County.

Upon completion of the orientation, you can decide if you’d like to become a volunteer tutor.

No prior teaching experience is necessary to become a tutor, but volunteers must be at least 18 years of age and have a high school diploma or equivalent.

All prospective volunteer tutors must attend the orientation session prior to enrolling in training.

There will be two separate tutor trainings offered: Basic Literacy Learner and English Language Learner.

Both trainings consist of three separate modules.

Orientation and Successful Tutoring (Module 3) are the same for both BLL and ELL.

The potential tutors are required to complete orientation and all three modules to become a LVOC tutor certified through Literacy New York.

The BLL training modules are all scheduled for Mondays from 5 to 8 p.m. at OCO’s Midtown Offices on April 22 (BLL Module 1), April 29 (BLL Module 2), and May 6 (Successful Tutoring Module 3).

The ELL training modules are scheduled at OCO’s Midtown Offices on April 23 from 2 to 5 p.m. (ELL Module 1), April 30 from 2 to 5 p.m. (ELL Module 2) and May 6 from 5 to 8 p.m. (Successful Tutoring Module 3).

Prospective tutors may register for either tutor training sessions (ELL or BLL) or for both of them.

You do not have to speak the native language of the English Language Learner (student) in order to become an ELL tutor.

Call the LVOC office at 342-8839 or email: lvoswego@oco.org to register for the orientation.
