Ryan Phelps Uses Lapped Traffic To Grab A Big Fulton Speedway Modified Win

FULTON, NY – (By Dave Medler) – It’s never over until the checker flag waves. Ryan Phelps proved that Saturday night at the Fulton Speedway in the 35 lap Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modified feature. Phelps was able to run down and pass Robbie Bellinger  on lap 28 when the back of the field the bunched up making it tough for Bellinger to get by.

Once out front, Phelps was able to put lapped cars between him and the rest of the field in the caution free race.

Other winners on K-ROCK Night were, Rocco Leone, SUNY Canton Sportsman, Rick Miller, NAPA Late Models, Gary Hoppins, E&V Energy Novice Sportsman, Skip DeGroff, Four Cylinder Stocks, Barney Waldron, Kevin Winton & Steve Marks, Midstate Vintage Stock Car Club.

Robbie Bellinger got the jump on the field as he out hustled other front row starter Tim Schneider Jr. to lead the opening lap of the 35 lap Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modified feature.

By lap 10, Bellinger was out front alone, while behind him, Roy Bresnahan, Dale Planck and Ryan Phelps were in a tight fight for second, third and fourth. Chad Phelps was some distance back in fifth.

With 15 laps showing on the lap counter, Bellinger was on rails out front, as he built-up a full straightaway lead. Planck and Phelps ran nose to tail and side by side running for second, while Bresnahan and Chad Phelps showed fourth and fifth.

When the starter showed the halfway sign, Bellinger started drawing in on the back of the field as Planck and Phelps would try to take advantage cutting into Bellinger’s advantage.

With 10 laps to go, Bellinger was having a tough time putting cars a lap-down because they were racing two-three wide. This let Phelps, who moved into second two-laps before to catch Bellinger. Two- laps later ,Bellinger, running the top groove in four trying to lap cars, slipped  out the groove allowing Phelps to shoot by on lap 28.

Over the final laps, Phelps was able to put lapped cars between himself and the rest of the field to be the first  under the checkers in the caution free race. Last week’s feature winner Dale planck came home second, followed by, Robbie Bellinger, Roy Bresnahan and Chad Phelps to complete the top-five.

After Phelps exited his, NAPA Auto Parts/Kinsella Quarries/Big Red Towing/ Tracey Road Equipment/Dave Miller Auto Body/ Bombadil’s Tavern/Pizza Man Pub/No.99  he talked about the popular win.

“We just had a real good setup tonight. I felt bad with the crew tonight, the track kept getting drier and I kept making them do stuff to it,” Phelps said with a chuckle.”I think they are all happy now as it paid off. It was good anywhere I wanted to go, the lapped cars got a little hairy there for a while waiting for them to move over. What are you going to do, they’re racing too.”

Phelps then talked about his battle for second place with Dale Planck and then his pass of Robbie Bellinger for the win.

“Dale (Planck) raced me real clean. He was able to keep his momentum up there. I was real good on the bottom of one and two, I really needed to be up a lane in three and four, that’s where he really tried to keep me down, he raced me real clean and I just got lucky and was able to slip in there.”

“Rob (Bellinger) looked like he got a little messed up with the lapped cars and I got to take advantage of it. And I got to him and I saw what he was dealing with. I saw him slip up just a little bit, I knew if I was going to get him I had to get him there. Who knows when you get into those lapped cars, you can get boxed in. I cleared him just enough and drove it hard into one and sealed it off. From there I don’t know if it was close or not, but this thing was hooked up.”

In the 20 lap SUNY Canton Sportsman feature, Rocco Leone and Beth Schneider  put on a show. Rocco Leone took the lead at the drop of the green and held off the field for his first ever feature win in the class.  Leone related it was a longtime coming after moving up to the class two and half years ago. Points leader Beth Schneider keeps knocking on the door to victory lane. Once again she came from deep in the field(15th) to score a strong second place finish. Behind Leone and Schneider were, Jim Spano, Chris Hulsizer and Gregg Kimball to round out the top-five.

Rick Miller is now two for two in the win department in the NAPA Late Models. Once again the Late Models put on a great show. Miller took the lead from Alan Fink on lap 3 and led the rest of the way in the 20 lap feature. The win was anything but easy for miller. First he had to hold-off constant pressure from Fink till lap 18 when Fink appeared to break his front end after contact with a lapped car. Over the last two laps Miller had to hold off Dale Caswell for his second win in a row. AJ Kingssley, Sean Beardsley and Alan Chapman finished third through fifth.

Gary Hoppins  was able to chase down race long leader Jeremy Dyget to take the lead on lap11 and then go on to the 15 lap E&V Energy Novice Sportsman win. Jeremy Dygert, Brandon Kauhn, Ricky Yelle and Nick Rupert rounded out the top-five.

Skip DeGroff racked up another win in the 15 lap Four Cylinder Stock feature. Keith Zirbel, Mark Johnston, Justin Buske and Eric M Zirbel chased DeGroff across the line.

The Midstate Vintage Stock Car Club made their yearly visit to the “High Banks.” Barney Waldron, Kevin Winton and Steve Marks picked up feature wins in their divisions.

In a special Fathers Day Race the winners were, Dayne Cory, Four Cylinder Stocks, Randy Coit Late Models and Harry Murphy, Sportsman.
