Mexico Farmers’ Market to Open June 26

MEXICO, NY – Residents in Mexico and the surrounding area will find it much easier to enjoy the goodness of fresh fruit and vegetables with the opening of the first Mexico Farmers’ Market.

An initiative of the Nutrition Collaboration of Oswego County, the market will be held each Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m., beginning June 26, at Oswego County Opportunities’ Mexico Community Service Center at 5871 Scenic Ave.

According to Amy Roland, director of OCO Nutrition Services and a member of the Nutrition Collaboration, more than a dozen vendors have shown an interest in being at the Mexico Farmers’ Market and many more have been invited to participate prior to the market’s opening.

“We are excited about the response that we have received from not only vendors, but from community members, the chamber of commerce, and area businesses as well. Our committee, which includes Mexico Deputy Mayor Jim Hothckiss, Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Agriculture Specialist, Lynette Wright, and members of the Nutrition Collaboration has been working on the concept of a farmers’ market in Mexico for more than year and are pleased that it has finally become a reality. The Mexico community has been supportive of having a farmers market and is looking forward to its opening,” said Roland.

When the idea of re-establishing a farmers’ market in Mexico first arose, Roland said that making fresh fruits and vegetables readily available fit nicely with the Nutrition Collaboration’s mission of promoting proper nutrition.

“The focus of the Nutrition Collaboration is to increase individuals knowledge of nutrition and educate them so that they may make informed decisions about proper nutrition for themselves and their families. Our members work together to positively affect nutrition, wellness, and hunger in Oswego County,” said Roland.

The Mexico Farmers’ Market will promote local agriculture and the many types of produce and products that are grown and harvested in Oswego County.

In addition to the variety of vendors, the market will host food tasting and demonstrations during each market and the committee is currently planning on having entertainment on hand as well.

For more information on the market or how to join as a vendor, contact Roland at (315) 598-4712, ext. 1811.
