American Red Cross Recognizes Two Dedicated Volunteers

DanielleStephanieIt is not everyday you find two dedicated young people who are able to fit into their busy lives the time and effort that Stephanie Hallinan and Danielle Hand give to the American Red Cross. These two young women are the co-presidents of the SUNY Oswego Red Cross Club for the second year. They are both juniors who started in the Club as freshmen and last year assumed the role of president jointly. The Red Cross Club on campus recruits both blood donors and volunteers to work at the blood drives. With three drives on campus each year all three being three days long, this keeps the Club busy. They are also involved in the adopt-a-platoon program, learning about Red Cross programs and services, the measles initiative, and this year have agreed to sign on as “heroes” for the American Red Cross and fundraise at least $1000 to help reach that campaign goal.

In June Danielle and Stephanie were each awarded a $500 scholarship from the American Red Cross Blood Services division for their efforts in achieving and surpassing goals set for blood collections on campus during the 08/09 school year. They were recognized again for their efforts with the Red Cross Club in early summer by the Onondaga-Oswego Chapter in the Youth Services category. They were also nominated and chosen for recognition at the New York State level for the work they have done with the Red Cross Club on campus. According to both young women volunteering is an important part of their lives and who they are. While sometimes the schedule is hectic they are committed to serving the community and helping others in need.

Danielle and Stephanie are again being honored for the work they have done, continue to do and the challenges they have accepted for the coming year. They are being named as the Red Cross Volunteers of the Month for September. This recognition program, sponsored each month by a partnership with Dunkin Donuts, allows local offices to recognize the efforts of dedicated volunteers. Each winner receives a gift card donated by Dunkin Donuts as a token of appreciation for their efforts. Danielle and Stephanie are very deserving of this recognition and we are proud to have them as volunteers in the Onondaga-Oswego Chapter of the American Red Cross.

If you are looking to give of yourself, and are looking for an organization that needs and values its volunteerse, please stop by the local Red Cross office at 333 West First Street or call 343-0967 to talk about your interests and the many opportunities we have available.
