OSWEGO, NY – Members of the SUNY Oswego fraternity Sigma Tau Chi were cited Tuesday night by the mayor for their history of community service.

The award recognized of the fraternity’s past achievements as well as the ongoing dinner they do on Wednesdays at the church through the Salvation Army.

They have had a positive affect on the community, according to the mayor’s proclamation.

The task force formed by the brothers has helped clean city parks, assisting senior citizens with various household chores, mentoring high school students in preparation of the SATs and organizing a Bingo event at the Ladies Home of Oswego among other activities.

The brothers are also planning a benefit this weekend in memory of a good friend, Jen Knighton (Lapoint).

“The ‘Jen Benefit’ will be Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. at Aunt Mary’s on West First Street,” according to fraternity spokesperson Christopher Marin. “The money raised will go to her memorial and an initiative in her name.”

The funds go towards equipment for Oswego hospital, bike safety helmets for youngsters, or a program to educate people about the negative effects from binge drinking.

“We are in need of donations for the raffle tickets. Aunt Mary will be cooking the dinner. Dinner is $7,” Marin said. “We will also be selling baked goods as well as handing out information on binge drinking and selling raffle tickets for various prizes.”

Jen was a good friend who just graduated college in the spring and passed away after she jumped from a moving car, according to Marin.

“She often spoke of the negative effects from binge drinking,” Marin explained. “In her memory, we will strive to educate people of the dangers of binge drinking and attempt to stem this epidemic among young adults.”

He  added the fraternity is continuing to provide assistance in its First Ward neighborhood. He encourages members of the neighborhood who may need help with a variety of chores to contact him.

“We are doing dinners every Wednesday at the church with the Salvation Army. This week was canceled due to the Columbus Day schedule, but it will re-start next week and every Wednesday. Usually we serve spaghetti and this week Canale’s donated a whole bunch of spaghetti sauce via Connie Cosemento, and we thank them for that donation,” Marin added.

The Oswego High School Class of  2011 is prepared to begin its march toward June 25 graduation exercises at the SUNY Oswego Campus Center. However, the members of the Class of 2010 have made their mark and are moving to their next life step.

Oswego Middle School Principal Bonnie Finnerty has proudly announced the final honor roll for the 2009-2010 school year.

Nathaniel V. Ellis graduated from the U.S. Army Warrant Officer Candidate School at Fort Rucker, Daleville, Ala., and was appointed to the rank of warrant officer one.

The Curse of the Silverback, the Enchanted Forest/Water Safari’s newest water ride, which debuted in 2009, is expected to continue to draw visitors with its unique purple and black appeal and daring silverback theme.  Riders experience a 100 foot drop into a large 40-ft diameter bowl where they circle the bowl dropping out the middle into the splash pool below.
