Students in the Culinary Arts program at Oswego County BOCES recently hosted their first Culinary Salon of the school year. Testing their application of the culinary techniques and skill sets learned over the first seven weeks of school, the students gave demonstrations and prepared an assortment of dishes for food industry mentors and OCB personnel.
The students were divided into a variety of teams each focusing on a different culinary-related category. From a table preparation display where guest judges could learn the secrets behind fancy napkin folding to a knife skills demonstration where uniquely fashioned ‘apple bird’ garnishes were created; a station where students gave presentations about menu preparation and pricing to the delectable samples of such specialties as homemade breads and rolls, pastries, muffins, cookies, onion rings, and french fries the salon showcased many aspects of the student’s culinary knowledge. Samples were rated based on taste and preparation, but the students’ professionalism and knowledge were also taken into consideration. The judges’ ratings and feedback helps the students prepare for future Culinary Salons as well as upcoming SkillsUSA competitions.
Culinary’s Signature Club held a bake sale during the event. Funds raised during the event will benefit the Culinary Arts students that will be competing in the SkillsUSA competitions.
