Fishing Reports for November 6, 2009

This report a courtesy of Oswego County Department of Community Development, Tourism and Planning.

The following notice has been posted for Lake Ontario waters:
Remember the area around the Nine Mile Point Nuclear Facility is off limits to boating. The restricted area stretches 1,000 yards offshore and extends from the Alcan plant to the Sunset Bay area along Lake Ontario, east of the city of Oswego.

Oswego River/Lake Ontario report:
Oswego River report:
According to Larry Muroski of Larry’s Oswego Salmon Shop:
The water level has dropped from over 10,000cfs earlier this week to 7,230cfs this morning. It looks like a great weekend with nice weather and lots of trout throughout the river and some salmon still at the dam. Driftboat anglers are reporting lots of action with some nice catches. Suggested bait – trout beads, nightcrawlers, wax worms, egg sucking leaches, egg sacs, Glo-bug yarn, crazy eggs, pink worms and fathead minnows.   Other tributaries doing well are Catfish Creek has some salmon, Mill St. in Hannibal has salmon and trout, and Nine Mile Creek has lots of trout.

Salmon River/Pulaski Area report:
According to Whitaker’s Sport Shop & Motel:
Yesterday anglers reported a good bite in the morning but the weather changed in the afternoon and things slowed down. If you’re looking for fresh fish the lower end of the river would be a good bet, however, some days have been better than others. If you’re still looking for salmon, the upper end of the river still has a few salmon hanging around the gravel areas in the Upper and Lower Fly Fishing Area, Frazier’s Run and Ellis Cove. The upper section of river is also holding browns and steelhead.

According to the Douglaston Salmon Run:
Yesterday the bite was decent on the run. Most of the fish are coming out of the fast water. However, the slow long pools should not be over looked. However fish the fast water coming into the head of the pool rather than focusing on the belly.

According to Capt. Troy Creasy of High Adventure Sportfishing Charters:
There are fish scattered top to bottom in the Salmon River. Many of the local creeks even with low flows are loaded with dime bright fish. Pick a spot, pick your favorite bait or fly and just fish. Weather is perfect for fall / winter steelhead fishing and the fish are still holding in the fast water but each day I am finding more in the holes as well.

Oneida Lake report:
The nighttime shore bite for walleyes has been good but not always consistent. Most anglers are finding it very active one night but slow the next. Stickbaits, especially those resembling gizzard shad, are good choices of bait.  Fathead minnows are taking yellow perch in 10 to 20 feet of water around weeds and anglers are finding smallmouth bass throughout the lake.

Sandy Pond report:
There is not much activity on the pond at this time.
