Speed Demons Splashed in Auburn

Fulton Speed Demons challenged the Auburn Stingrays in Auburn on November 21.The Speed Demons B girls swimmers are undefeated this season. Winning their match were Janelle Tallents, Hannah Jones, Courtney Beckwith, Courtney DeLong, and Lacey Reich.

Close races were also given by Hayden Williamson, who took 2nd over 3rd by .31 seconds in the E girls 25 freestyle.

Griffin Marriner missed 2nd and took 3rd by .76 seconds in the E boys 25 backstroke.

For the D girls, Sabrina Verdoliva missed 1st and took 2nd by .20 seconds in the 50 freestyle. Miwa Burdic won by .92 seconds in the 100 freestyle.

For the C girls, Kaitlyn Trudell won by .33 seconds in the 200 freestyle. In 200 IM, the first three places were just .83 seconds apart, giving Aliyah Conner 3rd place. Casey Jones missed 2nd and took 3rd by .13 seconds in the 100 freestyle. Kaitlyn Trudell took 2nd over 3rd by .70 seconds in the 50 breaststroke.

For the C boys, Kyle Buck won by .62 seconds in the 50 freestyle.

Lacey Reich took 2nd over 3rd by .33 seconds in the B girls 50 freestyle. Courtney Beckwith won by .29 seconds in the 100 freestyle.

Daisy Ruiz missed 3rd and took 4th by .49 seconds in the A girls 50 freestyle. Scott Bullard took 2nd over 3rd by .23 seconds in the A boys 50 freestyle.

Bringing in first place in their individual events were Katie Distin and Jenna Ruzekowicz for the E girls. Kyle Hotaling and Sam Johnston for the E boys. For the D girls are Sabrina Verdoliva and Miwa Burdic (two events). Kaitlyn Trudell and Aliyah Conner placed first for the C girls and Kyle Buck (two events) for the boys. In the B girls class, Janelle Tallents, Hannah Jones and Courtney Beckwith (two events) placed first and for the A boys, Benjamin Davis.

Four swimmers qualified during the meet to swim in the New York YMCA State Meet that will be held in Buffalo in March. These swimmers included Katie Distin in the 25 freestyle, Jenna Ruzekowicz in the 50 freestyle, Mark Tallents in 100 freestyle and the 50 freestyle, and Janelle Tallents in the 200 freestyle. Swimmers qualified for states by bringing in times under the qualifying standard in individual events.

With emphasis on individual improvement, several swimmers were noted for taking substantial time off of their individual events. These swimmers took more than 5 seconds off their individual time. Airyona Croci took off 7.10 seconds for the 25 back strokes. Hayden Williamson took off 5.56 seconds and Lane Rawls took off 12.14 seconds in the 25 freestyle. Kyle Hotaling took off 5.66 seconds in the 50 freestyle, Zoe June took off 14.22 seconds in the 50 back, Jake LeVea took off 7.51 seconds in the 50 butterfly and Kaitlyn Trudell took off 7.18 seconds in the 50 breaststroke.

In the 100 freestyle swimmers that were noted for taking substantial time off were: Jenna Ruzekowicz with taking off 40.24 seconds, Kali Spaulding with 30.95 seconds, Miwa Burdic took off 6.17 seconds in the 100 freestyle and Audrey Johnston took off 26.48 seconds in the 100 freestyle.

The biggest improvements were in the 200 freestyle with Tabor Freeman taking off 1:22.14 followed by Josie Collins (1:12.04) and Justin Grower (1:00.88). Kaitlyn Trudell took off 45.41 seconds and Sarah Tallents took off 44.07. Jacob Strauss took off 22.77, Sage Hourihan took off 22.55, Andrew Distin took off 20.38 and Ashli Dodge took off 19.68 seconds. Aliyah Conner took off 16.06 seconds in the 200 IM.

In recognition of their efforts during practices and the meet against Auburn, Coach Cathy Peterson named the following swimmers as the team’s Swimmers of the week: Jenna Ruzekowicz, Airyona Croci, Kyle Hotaling, Lane Rawls, Katie Curtis, Miwa Burdic, Sabrina Verdoliva, Josie Collins, Zoe June, Kaitlyn Trudell, Samantha Tanner, Casey Jones, Aliyah Conner, Abbey Zych, David Tallents, Sage Hourihan, Keegan Condon, Kyle Buck, Janelle Tallents, Ross Gardner and Benjamin Davis.

The Speed Demons return to action Saturday December 5 at the Granby Elementary School against Cortland.
