OSWEGO, NY – The American Division bowling crown will rest in Oswego while the Varsity B hockey team continues to improve, wrestlers give it their all and eighth grade girls’ basketball is successful.

Title Match Goes To Buc On Lanes

OHS Buc bowlers win division crown

Bowling made its return to Oswego High this year and on Tuesday the boys’ team captured the Central New York Counties League American Division crown.

The Bucs faced off against Auburn, as the two were vying for the title, and swept all three highly competitive games.

Coach Bob Hoefer said, “We took all three games from second place Auburn. Every game bowled by the Bucs was 200 or better. We were led by senior Jamie Cliff with a 734 series and eighth grader Matt Clemons 700 series.”

Cliff finished strong to lead the Bucs with a high game of 267 while Clemons had a 268 en route to his seven century total. Zack Sizemore finished with a 659 (234) followed by Matt Salvador 651 (233) and Cameron Byrne 647 (224) for a relatively consistent performance for the Bucs.

Oswego won the first game 1,124-907 and followed up with a 1,121-1,039 victory. The final game was a shootout with the Bucs scoring 1,146-1,088.

The Bucs finished 23-4 in division to take the title while overall the squad is 37-8 on the year.

In girls’ action, the Bucs lost all three points to Auburn 851-657, 802-699-789-641.

Ashlee Lytle paced the Bucs with a 509 followed by Christie Hoefer with a 471 and Paige Blum 417.

Varsity B Icers Doing Well

The Oswego B varsity hockey team has played well in recent games.

Oswego lost a hard fought 5-3 game to Central Square. The Bucs jumped to a 1-0 lead just 32 seconds into the game as David Mathes scored with Jeremy Purce and Jon Kaplewicz assisting.

The lead went to 2-0 as Purce scored unassisted.

However, Central Square went on a three-goal tear to take a one-goal lead in the second period.

In the third, Sean Mood, from Jordan Darling, scored on a power play to tie it up, but Nick Capriotti scored with just minutes to go in the period with what proved to be the winning goal.

The Bucs scored a 5-3 win over Ithaca B.

After a scoreless first period Chris Pike, with assists from Tyler Grimshaw and Purce, put home a wrap around goal for a 1-0 lead just 57 seconds into the second period. At the 5:25 mark David Culeton cashed in a slap shot as Grimshaw and Pike assisted.

Ithaca came back with the next two goals as the teams combined for five goals in just over four minutes of the second period. Grimshaw scored in the power play as Kaplewicz and Pike assisted and then Pike scored what proved to be the gamer with 9:54 gone in the second. Grimshaw and Kaplewicz assisted.

In the third Grimshaw cashed in another with Culeton and Pike assisting.

Josh Cooley and Chris Bonner combined for 21 saves for the Bucs as the offense took 49 shots on the Ithaca goalies.

Oswego also scored an 8-4 win over Cicero-North Syracuse.

Pike, from David Walpole, accounted for the first goal just 63 seconds into the game and late in the period. CNS came back with one in the second, but Oswego exploded with goals by Tyler Grimshaw (from Darling and Pike), Purce (from Jake Anderson and Mathes), Mathes (from Colin Burns and Bryan Cary), Grimshaw (from Purce), Pike (from Walpole) and Pike (from Mathes and Anderson).

Oswego took 38 shots on net while goalies Chris Bonner (14) and Josh Cooley (9) combined for 23 saves.

Wrestlers Battle, But Fall Short

The Oswego High School varsity wrestling team has the desire to succeed, but unfortunately the numbers, due to injuries and illness, did not allow for victory against invading Jordan-Elbridge on Monday night.

Oswego captured five matchers of the eight that were wrestled, but the forfeits once again proved costly.

Action started at 145 where JE earned a forfeit win for Jesse Dexter.

However, at 152 Dan Ellingwood hit the mat and pinned Eric Gross in 1:35. Buc teammate Mike Ruggio followed with a forfeit win and then his brother Tommy Ruggio won via a pin over Ryan Hubbs in 3:38 at 171. Shane Bartrum wrestled up and earned a win at 215 over Jeffrey Bryant in 32 seconds.

At 103 Matt DeFabio was pinned by Trevor Petit in 1:56 while Oswego lost by forfeit at 112 and 119.

Oswego 125 pounder Anthony Todaro lost a major decision, 13-4, to Preston Bishop and 130 pounder Austin Gilbert lost by a pin in 1:49 to Joe Mills.

Kyle Rossi, at 135, gained a decision in a battle with Kalys Zhumakadyruulu.

Adam Doviak finished off the night at 140 as the Buc lost to Mitch Cooper 8-3.

Eighth Grade Girls Victorious

The OMS Eighth Grade girls won their first game of the year defeating Baldwinsville 47-24.

Erica Adkins finished with 20 points while Bella Winklestine had six. Scoring four each were Kerrigan Cummins, Maddy Muckey, Sydney Knight, Kaitlyn McRae and Kennedy Singletary while Hannah Fitzgerald had two points.

Playing solid defense were Allison Bathelor, Morgan Cook, Allison Hare, Molly Malone, Mickey Allen and Emily Mills.

The team also won a 33-29 game over Central Square as Adkins paced the Bucs with 15 points.

Sam Cutro, Cummins and Fitzgerald had four each while Muckey and Knight tallied two each.

Coach Fred Ensworth credited Emily Mills, McRae, Morgan, Bathelor, Hare, Winklestine, Singletary, Malone and Allen with solid defense.

The Oswego High School Class of  2011 is prepared to begin its march toward June 25 graduation exercises at the SUNY Oswego Campus Center. However, the members of the Class of 2010 have made their mark and are moving to their next life step.

Oswego Middle School Principal Bonnie Finnerty has proudly announced the final honor roll for the 2009-2010 school year.

Nathaniel V. Ellis graduated from the U.S. Army Warrant Officer Candidate School at Fort Rucker, Daleville, Ala., and was appointed to the rank of warrant officer one.

On January 15, 2010 Petty Officer Second Class William W. Tresidder reenlisted in the US Navy.
