The Fulton District Wide Storytelling Festival was held and storytellers from throughout the district showcased their talents in telling a wide variety of stories. Participants told a folktale, fairytale, myth, legend, tall tale or fable. The stories ranged from spooky legends to hilarious tales and many had a useful moral attached that provided a bit of advice to audience members about life.
The festival represents a culmination of the storytelling process in which students competed for the honor to represent their schools at the district level by progressing from the classroom and grade level competitions to the building level and then finally the opportunity to tell their stories at the District Festival in front of a large audience.
Each year, the caliber of storytellers in the district festival has increased causing organizers several years ago to change the format from that of a competition to a storytelling festival which celebrates the art of storytelling and all students who have achieved this level of distinction within the Fulton City School District.
The goals of the storytelling program are to increase self-esteem, develop poise and confidence in public speaking, enhance listening and memorization skills, strengthen language development and heighten the student’s appreciation of literature.
