APW Takes One-Two At Entergy Science Competition

The two teams from Altmar-Parish-Williamstown High School finished in first and second place at the Entergy Science Competition on February 6th. Team “A.K./P.W.†took first place honors in the county competition with Team “Vy?istit to†taking second. Two teams from the Altmar-Parish-Williamstown School District participated in the Entergy Science Competition held at Oswego County BOCES on Saturday, Feb. 6th, and walked away with the 1st and 2nd place awards. The two teams were coached by APW science teacher Toni Pugliano and Entergy employees Sheila Brey and Tom Kerr served as mentors to both teams.
Team “A.K/P.W.†with team members Timothy Busbee, Brian Wilson, Marius Kroemer, and Lisa Ahn Phit took first place honors and earned each a $1,000 scholarship with their presentation on uranium isotopic separation. Their project looked at three methods of isolating Uranium 235: Gas Centrifuge, Gaseous Diffusion and Laser Separation.
They were awarded the Sam Walker Memorial Trophy, named for a former APW student who participated in the Entergy Science Competition but was tragically killed in a motor vehicle accident. Pete Dietrich, Entergy Site Vice-President spoke of Sam’s love of the science competition and their decision with the Walker family to honor Sam by naming the 1st place award after him before presenting the large trophy to the APW team. For coach Pugliano, the award was especially emotional.
Team “Vy?istit to†with members Benjamin Clark, Willow Faulkner, Zachary Maurer and Vojtech Oralke presented a project on air filtration that earned them the second place finish and $750 scholarships. Their project showed the importance of an air filtration system used in a nuclear power plant to reduce particulates and eliminate gases in the environment. “Vy?istit to†is a Czech word meaning “to clean upâ€. Vojtech Oralke is a foreign exchange student from the Czech Republic.
The annual science competition, sponsored by Entergy featured 11 teams from Oswego County BOCES and five of the nine Oswego County schools presenting a wide range of projects.
Third place was awarded to the Hannibal “Team Acid Rain†with Fulton’s Team Gen X finishing fourth. Pulaski’s “Team Tur-bYnez†placed fifth and the Chic Geeks from Oswego County BOCES finished in sixth place.
Prizes awarded to the finishers ranged from $75 Visa gift cards for 6th place finishers to the $1,000 scholarships for 1st place team members.
