On February 11, 2010, The Adolescent Teen Pregnancy Prevention & Services program (APPS) hosted the National Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month (NTPPM) Planning Committee Meeting Kick-Off Event for 2010. There was a very successful turn out from all over Oswego County. Organizations such as the Oswego YMCA, Oswego County Workforce New York, New Life Crisis Pregnancy Center, Oswego Salvation Army, St. Stephen’s Church of Phoenix, APPS, Youth Bureau, Youth Advocate Programs (YAP), OCO Youth & Family Services, Farnham Family Service and AmeriCorps attended the Kick-Off Event to gain knowledge and raise awareness of the teen pregnancy issues facing our county. It is the main purpose of the committee to spread understanding to our residents in an effort to get conversations started between teens, parents and community members.
Joining forces with the Planning committee were AmeriCorps members representing their respective organizations coming together to brainstorm ideas for the whole county. They help with not only the tasks that are assigned to them by their own supervisors, but with many programs such as NTPPM. Americorps members are great role models in their fields and communities and are a valuable asset to the NTPPM meetings. The Oswego County AmeriCorps Program focuses on services for children and families. Members mentor youth, supervise out of school activities, manage volunteers, provide employment and training and build the capacity of non-profit programs. Oswego AmeriCorps members in attendance were Valerie Edwin of the Youth Bureau, Caleb Hayes of Oswego Salvation Army, Caitlin Buzzanca of APPS and Suzanne Pirrera of Youth Advocate Programs.
National Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month is observed in May. For more information regarding NTPPM please contact the Program Coordinator of APPS, Linda Eagan at (315) 963-4361.
