OSWEGO, NY – Thank a Service Member has a special event lined up for this year’s Veterans’ Day Salute.
“On Nov. 10, as part of our 2010 Veterans’ Day Salute, Thank a Service Member, in conjunction with its sponsors, will honor our troops and the volunteers that support them by offering a free public screening of the PBS award-winning and 2010 Emmy nominated documentary, The Way We Get By,” according to Peter Allen, executive director, Thank a Service Member, Inc.
It will be presented in Oswego Cinema 7, 138 W. Second St., at 5:45 p.m.
The Way We Get By tells the story of three great Americans – a grandmother of eight and a pair of elderly veterans – who’ve greeted more than a million U.S. troops as they’ve passed through the Bangor, Maine, airport, Allen explained.
This is the first and last place troops touch American soil as they are reunited with and depart their homeland, he said.
“The film is a deeply touching account of their patriotism and dedication to the troops in the face of their own battles with the effects of aging, illness, loneliness and much more,” he said. “We’d really like to see as much support as possible for this event.”

TASM is busy with Veterans’ Day coming up, he added.
“We have several activities in the works, including an event at Fort Drum on Monday,” he said. “The movie is going to be a great community event for Oswego. I’ve seen it and it’s a terrific movie.”
The organization is staying busy with local and global events; TASM just recently collaborated with the USO in Japan for an event in Tokyo.
“We’d like to do more community events in Oswego,” Allen said. “Right now, we hope a lot of people turn out for the movie. I know it’s a Wednesday evening, but it’s a feel good movie; we hope people come out and see it. You’ll be glad you did.”

The Oswego City Veterans’ Council will hold its Veteran’s Day ceremonies on Nov. 11 at Veterans’ Memorial Park along the Oswego River.
Everyone is invited to attend the memorial that begins at 11 a.m., according to George W. Hoffman Jr., master of ceremonies.
The flag will be retired and presented to Mayor Randy Bateman to be secured until Memorial Day 2011, he said.
Everyone taking part in the ceremonies is reminded to be at the park by 10:45 a.m.
There will be a reception at VFW Post 2320, 85 E. Bridge St., right after the ceremony.
The public is invited.
The Veterans’ Day Salute activities continue the following evening.
VFW 2320 will hold a sock hop evening on Nov. 12 from 7 p.m. to midnight.
“Come relive the fun of the 1950s and 1960s with music provided by YGH Music. We invite you to come dressed with your poodle skirts, leather jackets and other ‘50s and ’60 attire,” Hoffman said. “Hope to see you there!”
