Oswego County’s Jobless Rate Rises Again; Is State’s 3rd Highest

Unemployment in Oswego County shot back up in June after several months of declines.

The jobless rate rose half a percentage point from May to June, to 9.9%. It was 10.2% a year ago.

It was the third highest unemployment rate in the state, behind the 12% jobless rate in the Bronx and the 10.7% rate in St. Lawrence County.

The good news is that the number of people listed as employed rose 600 from May to June, to 53,700. However, the number of people listed as unemployed rose 400, to 5,900. Those numbers mean that there was a net rise of 1,000 people who entered the job market from May to June.

The unemployment rate only involves people who have jobs or people who do not have jobs but are looking for work. People who stop looking for work are not counted in this jobless rate.

The jobless rate in the three-county Syracuse area, of which Oswego is a component county, rose from 7.6% to 8%. Statewide, the jobless rate stood at 8% in June.

“In June 2011, the New York State economy continued its recovery from the effects of the last recession, adding 13,600 private sector jobs. Like the nation as a whole, our state unemployment rate increased over the month, and now stands at 8.0%. However, we remained significantly below the nation’s jobless rate, which increased to 9.2% in June,” said Bohdan M. Wynnyk, Chief of Labor Statistics, Division of Research and Statistics.
