OCO’s ‘Bowl O’ Gold’ Fundraiser Set March 10

FULTON, NY – Calling all bowlers, from gutter dusters to strikers: Get ready for the OCO “Bowl O’Gold!” Oswego County Opportunities will hold its 11th annual bowling tournament fund raiser on March 10, at Lakeview Lanes in Fulton. “This year’s event was dubbed the ‘Bowl O’Gold’ because it is so close to St. Patrick’s Day,” explained Diane Cooper-Currier, OCO’s executive director.

The Bowl O’Gold takes place from noon – 6 p.m. Registration is now open for 5-person teams, with choice of flights starting at noon – 2:30 p.m. or 3 – 5:30 p.m. (first come, first served).

Businesses and individuals are invited to donate door prizes for the raffles and silent auction, and major sponsors are being solicited as well.

“We chose the theme ‘Bowl O’Gold’ because this year’s event is so close to St. Patrick’s Day,” Cooper-Currier explained. “What is more precious than gold?  A life that’s been changed for the better. A community that’s been strengthened by the public and private sectors working together successfully. A future that assures the resources to help individuals and families overcome poverty. That’s what we do at OCO.”

OCO holds this fund raiser every spring to help support its more than 50 programs and services.

“We are the community action agency for Oswego County, which means we are charged to deliver services that help lift people out of poverty, Cooper-Currier stated. “Poverty comes in many forms. It can be lack of funds, lack of education, lack of resources to care for self or family; no job, no transportation, no health care; inability to afford or prepare nutritious meals, or find a safe place to live.”

Proceeds from the OCO Bowl O’Gold support programs that address current needs and help the agency build financial resources for the county’s future human service needs.

“Our communities have an increasingly important role to play in shaping the course of this future,” Cooper-Currier said. “Government funding continues to decrease while jobs continue to leave Central New York. We’re encountering more people in need, and we’re striving to meet those needs with fewer resources.”

“Every level of support makes a difference,” Cooper-Currier continued. “At OCO, 94 cents of every dollar received goes right back out to help people. That’s much higher than the national average for non-profits in the United States. You can give with confidence that your money is working hard to combat the forces of poverty.”
