OSWEGO TOWN, NY – The oldest person who ever lived in Oswego Town will be the topic of the first meeting of 2012 of the Oswego Town Historical Society on Feb. 18.
It will be held at 10 a.m. at the Oswego Town Hall, 2320 County Route 7.
The oldest documented resident ever to live in Oswego Town was Nathaniel Laird and he lived to 111.
Nathaniel was an active centurian and as stories go at 105 he walked to Oswego and back to buy seed from his home now on Demass Road in Southwest Oswego.
Longevity appears to be a family trait as Nathaniel’s granddaughter, Celia Irwin Simmons, lived to be 106, passing away in 1993 and his great-grandson, Norman Simmons, still resides in Fruit Valley and he’s a young 91.
Celia was an active member in the Southwest Oswego Methodist Church and well acquainted with Dr. Mary Walker.
Her husband, Judson, ran the cheese factory on the California Road in the early 1900s.
She remembered her grandfather, Nathaniel Laird, well.
More details of future 2012 meetings, including the dedication of the Dr. Mary E. Walker statue, will be given.
