OSWEGO – The H. Lee White Marine Museum is pleased to announce that Martha and Terry Hammill of Oswego have agreed to serve as the honorary chairs of the museum’s “A Titanic Affair” Committee.
“We are very fortunate to have the Hammills on board to help make this event a great success,” said Mercedes Niess, executive director of the H. Lee White Marine Museum. “We also have a terrific group of volunteers who are working to make not only the gala a ‘night to remember,’ but also other public events scheduled to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the famous ship Titanic.”
Martha and Terry are seasoned event committee members and actively support many cultural not-for-profits such as the Oswego Public Library and the Oswego Opera Theater.
They bring a wealth of experience in event planning and fund-raising to the committee.
The Hammills said, “We are proud to be volunteers and contributors to support the H. Lee White Marine Museum, which is a maritime treasure in our community. We look forward to sharing this evening with guests of the historic 100th anniversary re-creation.”
The museum held a similar fund-raiser in 2006, which was a sold-out event.
This year, the gala will be held at the American Foundry on April 14.
This larger venue will allow for ballroom dancing and costumed actors to engage the audience.
Music played throughout the evening includes harpist Marcella Slatter and bandleader Don Goodness with the seven-piece Do Good Swing Band.
In addition, the eight-course first-class meal served aboard the Titanic will be re-created by the American Foundry’s well-known chef, Emil Nymander.
“Tickets sales are going very well,” said Donna Kuhn, president of the museum’s Board of Trustees. “Not only have local community members come out to support the museum, but also people from Auburn, Chittenango, Pulaski, Syracuse and Sodus have purchased tickets to attend the gala. This is a once-in-a- lifetime event.”
George DeMass, Oswego Town historian, Titanic committee member and chaplain to the Titanic Historical Society noted, “The Titanic disaster moves people even today. Children and adults alike are intrigued with stories of those that survived and those that did not.”
The premier gala, “A Titanic Affair,” is one part of the H. Lee White Marine Museum’s year-long commemoration of this historic disaster.
For a small fee, a series of ballroom dance lessons will be offered beginning on March 29.
An expanded exhibit, “Titanic: Commemorating the 100th Anniversary,” will open in July and the 1958 movie, “A Night to Remember,” will be shown in the fall.
The main sponsor of the gala event is Alliance Bank.
