Oswego State men’s lacrosse edges Greensboro

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Britt Leone’s (Sr., Schenectady, N.Y.) goal with over three minutes left capped off a back-and-forth affair that saw eight ties and four lead changes before the Oswego State men’s lacrosse team posted a 9-8 victory over Greensboro College on Wednesday afternoon. The win moved to the Lakers to 3-0 on the season, while the Pride dropped to 3-4.

Cody Hoose (Fr., Syracuse, N.Y.), Chris Porten (So., Auburn, N.Y.), and Connor Khammar (Fr., Camillus, N.Y.) accounted for the three Oswego State goals in the first quarter to keep the score even at 3-3 until Chad Smith’s (Jr., Fulton, N.Y.) unassisted goal with one second left in the frame put the Lakers ahead 4-3.

It was a low-scoring second quarter as each team scored one goal apiece. Max Aiken recorded his second marker of the game for Greensboro before Connor Brown (Jr., Syracuse, N.Y.) fed Khammar for his second goal with 1:43 left before halftime with the score 5-4 in favor of Oswego State.

The Pride took their first lead of the game since the first quarter after Zach Frohne received a pass from Bill Blakely for his fifth assist with 5:30 on the clock in the third frame. Hoose found Matt Palmer (Fr., Pittsford, N.Y.) at 2:41 to level the score, but on the ensuing faceoff Thomas Brooks regained the Greensboro advantage at 8-7 with one quarter remaining.

Palmer tied the game on Oswego State’s second man-up opportunity of the fourth quarter with 8:02 remaining in regulation. The Lakers continued to turn up the pressure, as Mitchell Kanowicz stopped two shots before Leone scored the game-winning goal with 3:22 to play. Oswego State goalie Ian O’Brien (Sr., Gansevoort, N.Y.) registered one of his 14 saves a minute later to preserve the lead. Leone nearly added an insurance goal inside the final minute, but his shot ricocheted off the post.

The Lakers will travel to SUNYIT to face the Wildcats on Saturday at 1 p.m.
