Charity Bike Run Set To Assist Salvation Army

OSWEGO, NY – The Physical Services Committee got revved up for the annual Oswego Salvation Army and Oswego County ABATE Motorcycle Club’s charity bike run.

The 2012 edition of the event is planned for May 19, Gail Goebricher, event chair, told the committee.

“The Salvation Army is in desperate need of funds,” she said. “The people they have served for years, they still are serving. But – right now, at this point in time all over the country including Oswego we have so many people that used to be working that aren’t any more and they need help.”

Hopefully, they are only seeking assistance on a temporary basis, she said, adding, “Whatever the case is, they are there.”

This is the third year ABATE has volunteered to do this motorcycle run to help the Salvation Army, Goebricher said.

“It has gone very well. We have had no problems whatsoever,” she added.

They are asking for a police escort (at noon) from the Salvation Army building, 73 W. Second St., proceeding west along West Seneca Street to the city limits (following Route 104 West); also, for eight barricades to be used to block off a portion of the Salvation Army parking lot for the bikes on the day of the event; and a waiver of the Noise Ordinance between 1:30 and 5 p.m. that day for the live music, outdoors (weather permitting).

Registration will be at 11 a.m. at the Salvation Army. A $15 donation includes lunch.

The public is invited to view the motorcycle and participate in the lunch. Take-outs will be available.

The riders will go on about a 90-minute run to the Fair Haven area before returning to the Port City.

“When they come back, approximately 1:30 p.m., we will have lunch,” she said.

Vendors are welcome. For more information, call 343-6992 or 427-4765.

This is a great community event that brings people from all over into the Port City, Goebricher said.

Last year, some discovered the city’s lakefront – and Rudy’s – for the first time, she added.

The committee gave the request a favorable recommendation.
