OSWEGO, N.Y. – Rachael Raffa (Sr., Kings Park, N.Y.) tied the Oswego State women’s lacrosse single-game goals record with nine goals, as the Lakers (2-4) went on to defeat Cazenovia, 20-7, Wednesday afternoon at South Athletic Field.
Danielle Clark and Christy Foster gave the Wildcats (4-5) a 2-1 advantage early in the first half after Oswego State’s Kaila Curatalo (So., Rochester, N.Y.) started the scoring. Kelly Collins (Sr., Fairport, N.Y.) and Raffa scored within a minute of each other to put the Lakers back in front, but Melissa Rivera tied the game with the first of three goals with over 19 minutes remaining in the half.
The goal prompted an Oswego State timeout, which resulted in the Lakers scoring seven straight goals in a ten-minute span. Four markers came from Raffa’s stick, as Oswego State took a 10-3 lead with five minutes to play.
After another Rivera goal, Raffa posted two goals in the final 22 seconds of the frame to put the home team ahead, 12-4, at halftime.
Cazenovia opened the second half with a goal from Clark, but Raffa and Danielle Citro (Jr., Miller Place, N.Y.) answered right back.
Erin Cummings (Sr., Valley Cottage, N.Y.) posted three of the final six Oswego State goals, as the Lakers cruised to the win.
Cummings finished with four goals and three assists, while Collins scored two goals to go along with two assists. Becky Guess (Fr., Burnt Hills, N.Y.), Miranda Czechowski (Fr., West Seneca, N.Y.), and Stephanie Cronk (Jr., Endwell, N.Y.) rounded out the scoring for Oswego State. Citro, Czechowski, Raffa, Cronk, Guess, and Emily Wolff (Fr., Middle Island, N.Y.) also contributed assists.
Raffa tied Rachel Ventresca’s mark of nine goals in a game, which came on April 24, 2009 against Keuka.
Laker goalie Ashlee Engel (Jr., Webster, N.Y.) posted seven saves, while Cazenovia goalie Christina Marra stopped 20 shots.
Oswego State returns to action on next Tuesday when it travels to Potsdam to face the Bears at 4 p.m.
