Oswego State men’s lacrosse edges Potsdam

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State men’s lacrosse team (8-2, 1-2 SUNYAC) defeated Potsdam (5-4, 1-1 SUNYAC), 8-6, in a tightly contested match Wednesday afternoon at South Athletic Field, as head coach Ryan Martin earned his first conference win. Connor Khammar (Fr., Camillus, N.Y.) led the charge with four goals and three goals.

Freshman Cody Hoose (Syracuse, N.Y.) started off the scoring in the first period with his 14th goal of the season unassisted. Khammar (Camillus, N.Y.) put the Lakers up 2-0 after being on the receiving end of a pass from Britt Leone (Sr., Schenectady, N.Y.).

Potsdam got on the board under thirty seconds later with a goal from Ryan Paprella assisted by Ryan McConnell. With 4:52 left to play, the Bears tied the game up with a shot from Rob Kunz. Kyle Nicholas gave Potsdam its first and only lead of the game with a goal following a Kunz pass.

Brandon Dzwonkowski (Fr., Syracuse, N.Y.) evened the score with seven seconds to go in the first at 3-3 with an assist going to Chris Porten (So., Auburn, N.Y.), who was positioned behind the cage.

Khammar controlled the second quarter scoring two goals to put the Lakers up, 5-3, with helpers from Dzwonkowski and Casey Balzer (Jr., Nassau, N.Y.). Both markers proved to be the only goals of the quarter, as Oswego State took a two-goal lead into the break.

The third quarter took off quickly on both sides. After winning the opening faceoff, Potsdam scored less than thirty seconds into the period off of a shot by McConnell. Khammar did not leave the goal unanswered, however, and scored to give the Lakers another two-goal lead at 6-4.

Paparella scored his 10th of the season for Potsdam, making it a one-goal contest. With only 1:26 to go in the third, Hoose passed the ball to Matt Palmer (Fr., Pittsford, NY), who found the back of the cage with the only man-up goal of the game for either side.

Balzer finished up the Oswego State scoring early in the fourth with a goal assisted by Brian Slattery (Fr., St. James, N.Y.), who picked up a ground ball in the defensive zone and carried the ball nearly the length of the field. Potsdam closed out the scoring with a goal from Peter Pike at 8-6.

Neither team were successful during man-up situations, as Oswego State went 1-for-6 and Potsdam went 0-for-4.

Josh Roetzer (Jr., Williamsville, N.Y.) and Ian O’Brien (Sr., Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) led the Lakers in ground balls at five and four, respectively. O’Brien made several point-blank saves throughout the game to finish with a total of 11 stops. Potsdam goalie Mike Quinlan registered 10 saves.

Oswego State will travel to Geneseo on Saturday for a 1 p.m. contest.
