Fulton, NY – Flowers are beginning to bloom and vegetables starting to grow, as the Community Garden project in Fulton is in the heart of the growing season.
Established through the Nutrition Collaboration of Oswego County, with additional funding from Alliance Bank, the community garden, located near the Fulton’s Pathfinder Courts / Gilberts Grove housing complex, is providing participating Fulton city residents with the opportunity to enjoy fresh vegetables, herbs and flowers right from their own garden.
“The garden project has been well received,” said Amy Roland, Director of OCO Nutrition Services and a member of the Nutrition Collaboration of Oswego County. “Cornell Cooperative Extension and AmeriCorps have been wonderful in their support of the community garden. They have assisted in the planting and tending of the garden and have even supplied a Master Gardener, Jan Smith, to help educate participating community members on how to properly care for their garden so that they may receive an optimum yield from their vegetables and flowers.”
Cindy Walsh, of Cornell Cooperative Extension is also impressed with the progress of the garden project.
“It’s exciting to see the success that the Nutrition Collaboration of Oswego County has had with the Fulton Community Garden. They have received a great response and some of the gardeners are already harvesting produce. Thanks to the help provided by our Agricultural Team Coordinator, Jonathan Schell, Kerrie Pratt, AmeriCorps, and other community volunteers who helped prepare the garden beds the Fulton Community Garden is a hit. I wish them luck and I hope the Nutrition Collaboration of Oswego County are able to establish similar gardens in other Oswego County communities,” said Walsh.
According to Roland there are nine individuals and/or families participating in the project. Their gardens include; tomatoes, egg plant, peas, radishes, peppers, and a variety of flowers.
Water for the gardens is provided by the city of Fulton.
“We are very pleased that the city is working with us on the this project. We certainly appreciate their support and their generosity in providing water to the community garden,” said Roland.
“The Nutrition Collaboration of Oswego County is happy to know that the community garden project has helped those who have funded and support this project, as well as the families and individuals who are participating, gain a better understanding of how a community garden encourages good nutrition and health,” added Roland.
