“With October being National Breast Cancer Awareness Month it is the perfect time to spread the word and encourage people to get the cancer screenings they need,” said CSSP Program Manager, Carolyn Handville.  “As hair stylists serve on the front line making our community members feel better about themselves while hearing all of the good and all of the bad things going on in their clients’ lives, we thought it would be a perfect opportunity to get our message to the community by asking hair salons to help raise awareness of breast cancer and the free services we provide to help fight the disease.”

Additionally, Handville said that OCO’s Cancer Services Program Partnership would provide participating hair salons with aprons they could wear to promote the program along with tote bags to trigger the conversation.

Hair salons will also receive program cards to distribute to customers who inquire as well as free giveaways to hand out to all customers for helping to spread the word about the free services and cancer screenings available through the program.

According to the American Cancer Society, in Oswego County 13 individuals are diagnosed with cancer every week and 5 individuals will lose their battle to cancer weekly.  The Cancer Services Program Partnership of Oswego County provides free cancer screenings including clinical breast exams, mammograms, pap/pelvic exams and colorectal cancer screenings to uninsured men and women between the ages of 40 and 64.

“I encourage all Oswego County hair salons to join us for this free luncheon and learn how they may partner with us in our fight against cancer. We all know someone, whether a family member or a friend, who has experienced this terrible disease. We want to spread the word that the Cancer Services Program Partnership is here to help. We do not want any man or woman delaying to complete their annual cancer screenings due to a lack of health insurance coverage. I look forward to welcoming Oswego County’s hair stylists to our free luncheon and working with them to raise awareness about breast cancer and the services that this wonderful program provides to fight cancer and improve the overall wellness of our community,” added Handville.

Stylists and hair salons wishing to attend the luncheon are asked to RSVP at their earliest convenience by contacting the Cancer Services Program Partnership at 315-592-0830.
