Movie Gallery Declares Bankruptcy, Closing Stores; Fulton, Pulaski Not Affected

The logo of Movie Gallery video stores.Movie Gallery’s outlets in Oswego County will not be affected, at least initially, by the company’s move to close nearly one third of its stores.

The company, which owns the Movie Gallery and Hollywood Video rental store chains, and the Game Crazy videogame chain, filed for bankruptcy protection from its creditors late Tuesday in a Virginia federal court.



ICM, Inc. to Use its Retrofit Experience with Sunoco to Retrofit Idled Ethanol Plant in Fulton, NY

ICM, Inc. announced today that it has signed a contract with Sunoco, Inc., a leading manufacturer and marketer of petroleum and petrochemical products, to retrofit an existing, but idled ethanol plant in Fulton. Sunoco’s plant is the largest ethanol manufacturing facility in the northeastern U.S., and is strategically located to supply Sunoco’s retail gasoline network with ethanol as blending component; Sunoco purchased the idled facility in 2009.



Oswego Industries Is Hiring To Meet New Federal Contracts

Business is about to boom at Oswego Industries, and it couldn’t be happening at a better time.

Oswego Industries had to cut down its payroll as work evaporated. Some people with disabilities stopped coming; others kept working but without pay. “There are a lot of people on our floor who haven’t had work in longer than we’d like,” Crowley said.

Oswego Industries Earns Contract From US Defense Supply for Coveralls

Photo courtesy Oswego Industries.The white coveralls you see in the picture at left mean more protection for defense workers and more jobs in Oswego County.  Oswego Industries, Inc. of Fulton has earned a contract to produce the coveralls for the US Defense Supply.  They have to be made to very specific standards.  Oswego Industries will be hiring people to make the coveralls.  Find out more when you click to read the story.

P&C Purchase Would Make College Permanent in Fulton and ‘Masters of Our Own Destiny’

The closed P&C store at River Glen Square, potential future home of Cayuga Community College.

For more than 15 years, Cayuga Community College has been working in leftover, rented spaces. Now, it wants a home of its own.

The $11.2 million plan to buy the closed P&C Foods store at River Glen Square is intended, according to college President Daniel Larson, to create a space that “looks and feels and sounds and smells like a college campus.”

The public is invited to stop by Empower’s branch at 722 West Broadway, Fulton, the week of December 14, Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., and 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m., Friday. Visitors will enjoy refreshments and giveaways throughout the week, while taking in the new interior.



Fulton Schools’ Federal Stimulus Funds Saved Nearly 60 Jobs

More than $3.3 million in federal stimulus funds has poured into the Fulton City School District this year. The district says that money either preserved or created more than 61 jobs this year.

Panelists will include Dr. Ranjit Dighe and Dr. Lawrence Spizman, both of SUNY Oswego’s economics department; Dr. John MacDonald of the risk management program in Oswego’s School of Business; and Thomas Schneider, president and CEO of Pathfinder Bank and an adjunct in Oswego’s School of Business. Dr. Richard Skolnik, dean of the SUNY Oswego School of Business, will moderate the discussion.



Oswego County’s Share of Stimulus Funds So Far: $80 Million

An analysis by Oswego County Today that compared the amount of stimulus funds to the population of the counties shows that Oswego County is getting $659.87 in stimulus funds for each of the county’s 121,454 residents (using 2007 Census estimates).

That’s below the $804.68 average for each person in the state, but a little above the median amount of $641.53.
