Oswego County Federal Credit Union, ‘Good Morning America’ Team Up To Save Oswego Family $58,000 With ‘Savings Makeover’

Oswego County Federal Credit Union (OCFCU), joined with ABC News’ Good Morning America (GMA) to help the Gunn family of Oswego save more than $58,000 with a Savings Makeover,  said Bill Carhart, OCFCU CEO.

“Tom and Nancy Gunn of Oswego, two of our members, were selected by GMA from hundreds of people who wrote in asking to be part of the show’s Savings Makeover series,” Carhart said. “GMA’s Consumer Correspondent, Elizabeth Leamy,  taped the segment at OCFCU’s new Mexico branch at 5530 Scenic Ave. (Route 3).

Total savings for the Gunn family was $58,288. To achieve this, a variety of areas of their finances were re-vamped or revised, Carhart said. They were able to save $4,632 over the next two years by revising their cell phone, cable and Internet plans. A copycat grocery-shopping program is slated to save them $3,900 a year.

“We also worked with Brendan Higgins of the Thousand Islands Agency, Clayton, to save the family $2,082 on their car insurance. Aimee Johnson, our senior loan officer,  worked with  the Gunns to refinance their mortgage and have it paid off in 11 years instead of 19 years,  which saves $33,473.  Finally, we combined two car loans and existing credit card debt into one loan to be paid off in three years, the Gunns will save another $13,684.

“You don’t have to win a national contest to save on your finances, however, Oswego County FCU works with our members on financial makeovers every day. I encourage anyone who wants to improve their overall finances to join us and see Aimee or any one of our loan officers. They’re always ready to help.”

“We are thrilled to have won this opportunity and amazed at the results,” said Nancy Gunn. “ Both ABC’s Elizabeth Leamy and Oswego County Federal Credit Union worked so hard to help us achieve these savings and they did it well beyond our expectations. We will always be grateful.”
