Governor’s Budget A Starting Point; Job Creation, Retention Top Priority

Jan 26th, 2010 | By Contributor | Category: Aubertine

Last Tuesday, the Governor released his proposed executive budget. This budget is a starting point which includes a number of proposals I think take us in the right direction, but still, there are others that concern me. Now is not the time to increase spending, as has been proposed. We need to rein in our spending to match revenues, while keeping an eye on job retention and job growth.

The New Year Brings An Opportunity to Recognize Our Firefighters

Jan 26th, 2010 | By Contributor | Category: Community

As we begin this new year, I would like to take a moment to recognize the firefighters across the county and the chiefs and officers who lead them. In addition to the municipal paid and industry companies, Oswego County has approximately 30 volunteer fire departments that are manned by more than 1,000 volunteer firefighters.

Change in Federal Policy Integral to New Nuclear Facility

Jan 18th, 2010 | By Contributor | Category: Barclay

Unfortunately, it recently became clear that the federal government will not guarantee the loans needed to site the new facility. In short, this means that the current federal administration is not in strong support of nuclear energy.

Ethics, Elections Reform a Start; Budget Moves to Front Burner

Jan 18th, 2010 | By Contributor | Category: Aubertine

Everyone certainly recognizes the problems that exist and the need for tough ethics and election laws to address these issues and restore the people’s faith in our government. These changes will tighten up the laws that govern the relationships between lobbyists and elected officials as “consultants,” while also providing a long overdue means of enforcing violations in election law.

A Review of the Governor’s State of the State Address

Jan 11th, 2010 | By Contributor | Category: Barclay

The Governor’s State of the State address this week primarily focused on the seriousness of the state’s fiscal situation. The speech was more subdued and void of the usual ‘rah, rah’ tone Governors have taken in years past. Instead, his speech focused on the economy, and specifically how vital it is for New York to keep a balanced budget.

In Albany, We Need to Cut Spending, Pass Reforms, Work Together

Jan 11th, 2010 | By Contributor | Category: Aubertine

Last week, the governor delivered his State of the State address in which he hit on some key points that align with what I hope we can achieve this year. Most pressing is the need to rebuild our economy to create jobs, cut spending, reject new taxes or fees, and find ways to meaningfully address rising property taxes.

Looking Ahead to 2010: Report on New Tax Bill, Energy Conservation Projects

Jan 4th, 2010 | By Contributor | Category: opinion

The development of a new “Citizen-Friendly” tax bill was one of many projects that I set out to achieve when I presented the state of the county address last February. The 2010 tax bills, which are being delivered over the next few days, have been re-designed to make them easier to read and understand. And, the new format requires less paper, saving money and natural resources.

Would You Like To Super-Size That Oil Change?

Dec 28th, 2009 | By Contributor | Category: Letters to the Editor

Just yesterday I had a young woman come to my shop. Her mother is a customer of ours. She took her car to an auto chain in our town for an oil change. They told her she needed struts, springs, and tie rod ends. She wanted a second opinion and asked us to look [...]
