Members of the city of Oswego’s Dive Rescue Team recently attended SPLASH week. The event was held at the Oswego YMCA.
Edward Fillingham, of Henderson Harbor, was 75 in April 2009 when he launched his canoe despite extremely dangerous conditions and paddled 500 yards to save three boaters from the frigid waters of Lake Ontario. Rear Admiral Mike Parks, commander of the Ninth Coast Guard District, described Fillingham as “a shining example of what we all strive to be, a lifesaver and a servant.”
UPDATED: – – One of the victims has died.
Four people were rescued after being swept away by fast-moving high water in the Oswego River earlier this afternoon. Two of the victims were pulled out of the water near the Bridge Street Bridge. The other two were rescued behind the former Coleman’s restaurant.
Nine Oswego Maritime Foundation students and their two adult instructors are back safely on land after being rescued earlier this morning.
