The event will be a nice community picnic, organizers said. It will be held in Breitbeck Park with free picnic baskets of food for the first 50 families. Food at a discounted rate will be available for all other attendees to purchase. There will be plenty of activities and recycling education as well.

Earlier this school year, the city has been sending letters to parents of SUNY Oswego students who have been issued an appearance ticket or arrested in Oswego. The system is going well, according to Mayor Randy Bateman who has signed dozens of the form letters so far.

SUNY students recently completed their 18 Annual Walk-A-Thon to help support the United Way of Greater Oswego County.

More than 100 SUNY Oswego flooded the farmers’ market Thursday night. The students were able to find out about their new community as well as pick up some fresh produce, homemade goodies and other treats.

The Greater Oswego-Fulton Chamber of Commerce Oswego Farmers’ Market, celebrating more than over 50 years as Oswego’s Community Block Party, welcomes SUNY Oswego to College Community Night on Thursday.

The Port City’s extended family is set to return this weekend. Several events and activities are planned this year to mark the start of classes and the influx of SUNY Oswego students into the city. Classes will get under way on Monday.

On Aig. 6, the Oswego Sunrise Rotary Club visited SUNY Oswego to learn about storm chasing.

More than four dozen teachers, from a variety of subjects, became students for four days this week. They took part in the Summer Writing Institute at Sheldon Hall. Guest speaker for the opening day was local award-winning author Laurie Halse Anderson.

Rosemary S. Nesbitt, 84 of Oswego, passed away peacefully on Sunday Aug. 2, 2009, with her family by her side. She was born on Oct. 12, 1924, in Baldwinsville. In 1959, Mrs. Nesbitt adopted Oswego as her home, and worked tirelessly to bring to life the rich history of the Oswego area.

In response to recent regulations from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation prohibiting open burning, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Oswego County (CCE Oswego County) is exploring the possibility of a collaborative effort with other county agencies to help local farmers address the issue of agricultural plastics disposal.

High School students from the Fulton, Phoenix, and Sandy Creek school districts were recently recognized for their work with the CYO Mentoring Program, a program of Catholic Charities of Oswego County.
