FULTON, NY - Hospital week includes a celebration that recognizes work and support provided all year long by a special group of people – members of the hospital auxiliary.
Governor David Paterson issued a proclamation designating May 14, 2008, as Health Care Auxilian Day in New York State.
“The Auxiliary at A.L. Lee Memorial Hospital is active in supporting numerous events to raise funds and reach out to the community with health awareness and education,†said Dennis Casey, the hospital’s executive director. “This very active group functions as ambassadors for the hospital, and we’re very grateful for all that they do.â€
The hospital’s auxiliary has more than 75 members.
The group raises tens of thousands of dollars annually to help fund medical equipment purchases, said Tom Brown, Auxiliary president.
“Our organization also coordinates a benefit golf tournament in July, helps with a volunteer recognition luncheon every April, oversees the hospital Snack Bar, assists with patient services, and raises funds for scholarships to benefit hospital employees as well as area high school students,†he noted.
On a day-to-day basis, auxilians are volunteering in almost every area of the hospital, including: staffing the reception desk, delivering mail and flowers to patients, helping keep ice water pitchers filled, shredding old documents, cooking and serving in the Snack Bar, and running the numerous fund-raisers (uniform sales, book fairs, etc.).
According to the governor’s proclamation, New York State has more than 75,000 health care auxilians actively supporting a wide range of health facilities.
