Little-Known Alternative Location School Program Is Keeping Students From Quitting

Kristina Rathbun works with tutor Ryan Patrick at the district's alternative location program at the Education Center. "It teaches kids that are going to quit school and brings them back to school and teaches them what they need to learn so they can go on with their life," she said about the program.

Kristina Rathbun was going to quit school.  A straight A student whose grades sank because of problems with other students, she thought the only alternative was to leave.  Instead, she landed in a little-known district program for students with poor grades, attendance or behavior.  She and many of the nearly two dozen other students in the program are in the midst of remarkable turnarounds.

Zone Change Request Denied

A request by Steven Thomas for a zone change in the Second Ward failed to make it past the Common Council on Monday night. Neighbor opposition played  a big part in the aldermen’s decision. The council also said it wanted more information about what the property might be used for. Quest for Winter Rainbows – Salmon and Oswego Rivers Sparkle with Steelhead This Time of Year

The Salmon and Oswego rivers and Lake Ontario’s many tributary streams produce runs of steelhead in Oswego County all through the winter months. (Photo by Capt. Richard Miick.)

February finds a lot of New Yorkers complaining about the weather. They’re sick of snow banks lining sidewalks and streets, dirty slush soiling their shoes, pant legs and cars in streaks of mud and salt. But there’s a lot of color around if you know where to look for it, and the best place to catch a rainbow right now is Oswego County’s Lake Ontario tributaries.
