Oswego Girls Begin Swim Season Right With Win Over B’ville

The Oswego varsity girls swim team opened the 2008 season the right way, with a tight win over Baldwinwsville on Thursday, 51-42.

Oswego won the contest because it kept placing two swimmers among the top three finishers in events and put the meet away by taking the top two places in the 200 yard freestyle relay.

Senior co-captain Mo Donovan took wins in the 200 yard freestyle and the 500 yard freestyle.  Emily fountain won the 100 yard butterfly by five one-hundredths of a second.  Katie Metcalf scored an easy win in the 100 yard backstroke.

A pair of sophomores made hefty contributions.  Michaela Auer won the 100 yard breaststroke, while Mara Parker posted a time good enough to qualify for the Section III meet, with a personal best 27.59 seconds in the 50 yard freestyle.

Metcalf and Donovan, along with juniors Sarah Miller and Iveliz Lopez won the 200 free relay, while junior Lindsay Johnson, Parker and Auer, and eighth grader Chrissy Abare picked up the meet-clinching second in the relay.

“This meet was won tonight because of the gains of many,” said coach Josh Lerch. “If these girls had all come in where they were at this meet last season, then I think that Baldwinsville would have won all the close races and would have won the meet.

“This win is a testament to how important it is to maintain your fitness levels in the offseason and also how essential it is to get everything you can out of each practice in season.  I think that this team will be very successful this year because so many of the girls have committed generous amounts of time to their sport outside of the Varsity season.”

Lerch singled out Parker for her willingness to help fill a need for a second diver, with Laura O’Brien.
