At approximately 1:50 p.m., sheriff’s deputies and Phoenix Fire Department members responded to a vehicle crash reported at 9448 Pendergast Road.

A maroon 2003 Hyundai sedan travelling south on Pendergast Road was being operated by Shawn C. Fatcheric, 34, of Lock Street in Phoenix, police said.

Fatcheric was the only occupant in the vehicle.

Fatcheric’s Hyundai crossed over the oncoming lanes and drove onto the opposite shoulder of the road striking a tree head-on and causing the vehicle to become fully engulfed in flames, according to the accident report.

Fatcheric became trapped inside as a result of the crash and was later pronounced dead at the scene.

The cause of the accident is unknown at this time and is still under investigation.

A portion of Pendergast Road north of Lamson Road has been closed and will remain closed while Sheriff’s Accident Investigation Team members continue their investigation.
