SUNY Oswego’s ‘Desdemona’ shakes up women’s roles

OSWEGO, NY – Previewing Feb. 28 and running March 1 to 3 in SUNY Oswego’s Tyler Hall lab theatre, Paula Vogel’s “Desdemona, A Play About A Handkerchief,” promises to take audiences to a parallel universe for the key women in Shakespeare’s “Othello.”

Othello’s wife Desdemona (Dana Ernst, right) is an adventurous vixen, Bianca (Clare Barawski, left) is a prostitute dreaming of marriage and Iago’s wife Emilia (Robin Rubeo) is a prudish confidant and maid on a mission.

Tickets for the theatre department production, under the direction of faculty member Joan Hart Willard, are priced at $5 for the preview and $13 ($7 for SUNY Oswego students) for the regular run.

Tickets are available at all SUNY Oswego box offices, online at tickets.oswego.edu or by calling (315) 312-2141.

The play is recommended for ages 16 and above.

Friday night at the Brewerton Speedway Billy Decker won a classic battle with Pat Ward with a last lap pass to win the Tracey Road Equipment Modified feature. Saturday night at the Fulton Speedway Billy Decker did it once again. Decker took the lead on lap 22 from Chris Hile in the 35-lap Tracey Road Equipment Modified feature and never looked back, winning by over three seconds at the checkers.

Acclaimed Poet’s Latest Work Inspired By 4,000-Year-Old Epic

A character from one of humankind’s earliest great works of literature has a new life as the hero of an epic poem by Lewis Turco, emeritus professor of English and creative writing at SUNY Oswego. “The Hero Enkidu: An Epic” was published this summer by Bordighera Press. One reviewer described the 100-page poem, as a 21st century A.D. takeoff on the 21st century B.C. “Gilgamesh,” an epic poem about a king in ancient Mesopotamia.

Manor Holds Annual Family Picnic

The Manor’s annual family picnic featured a Mardi Gras theme this year, with the music of Elvis provided later in the evening. Family members of both the residents and rehabilitation patients enjoyed a meal with their loved one and mingling with the staff.
