Jeffrey Murray Awarded 2012 Elmer G. Hadlow Memorial Music Scholarship

Oswego High School Class of 2012 Graduate Jeffrey Murray has been named the recipient of the 2012 Elmer G. Hadlow Memorial Music Scholarship, which is awarded annually to an Oswego High School student who pursues an education and/or career in music. Oswego, NY – Oswego High School Class of 2012 Graduate Jeffrey Murray has been named the recipient of the 2012 Elmer G. Hadlow Memorial Music Scholarship, which is awarded annually to an Oswego High School student who pursues an education and/or career in music.

The $500 annual scholarship was established in 2005, upon the passing of Elmer G. Hadlow, a longtime resident of Oswego, and strong advocate of music in the Oswego community. Hadlow sang for over 50 years in church choirs, barbershop quartets and choruses throughout Oswego County and Central New York.

“We’re thrilled to present this year’s scholarship to a student who has such a strong love for music,” said Hadlow’s family members. “We look forward to hearing about his Jeff’s musical pursuits in college and thereafter.”

Rebecca Smith was the 2011 scholarship recipient.

Murray, is the son of Thomas and Donalee Murray, and plans to pursue music studies at Onondaga Community College. He also hopes to join the United States Army Band after college, and ultimately be a performer and work in the music industry.

“Since I was little, I have always been encouraged to reach for the stars,” said Murray. “Playing music on the big stage is my life-long pursuit.”

Murray has been actively involved in musical programs throughout his high school academic career. He has participated in the Oneida Jazz Festival since 2009 and was awarded best drummer in class AAA for 2011-12 along with best rhythm section in 2011. He also participated in the NYSSMA Solo Fest, All County Band, All County Orchestra, Alternate All State Jazz Band, 3 Bands of America Competitions, NYS Field Band Competitions, and participated in numerous other parades and events over the past 3 years.

Murray was also selected for the prestigious US Army All American Marching Band in 2012 on drumset.

Danquer Joins Step One Creative As Spring Semester Public Relations Intern

Oswego, NY – Step One Creative, an Oswego-based marketing communications firm, has announced that Brittani Danquer, of Fulton, New York, has joined the agency as a spring intern, according to President Shane R. Stepien.

Danquer is a junior public relations and business administration dual major at SUNY Oswego.

In addition to the internship with Step One Creative, Danquer is also a member of Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) Oswego Chapter, as well as the SUNY Oswego women’s club hockey team.

“I am beyond excited and grateful to have the opportunity to integrate my public relations and business knowledge into an agency setting,” said Danquer. “This hands-on experience is a great way to start building the foundation of a future career in public relations.”

Wells Joins Step One Creative As Public Relations Intern

Oswego, NY –  Meghan Wells has joined Oswego-based marketing communications firm Step One Creative as a public relations intern, according to the agency’s president, Shane R. Stepien.

Wells is a graduate of SUNY Oswego with a degree in public relations, and minor in business administration. She also has a Travel and Tourism: Hospitality/Events Management degree from Herkimer County Community College.

“I believe the internship with Step One Creative will prove to be beneficial by learning the necessary tools of the PR trade, while also having the opportunity to learn more about marketing and advertising,” said Wells. “I am excited to integrate my previous knowledge from SUNY Oswego with new experiences through the internship, and become better prepared for a job in my field.”

Within the internship, Meghan will be working on client projects specific to the public relations field, including news releases, general copywriting, and social media initiatives.

Folgherait Joins Step One Creative As Winter Intern

Step One Creative, an Oswego-based marketing communications firm, has announced that Leah Folgherait, of Oswego, has joined the agency as a winter intern, according to President Shane R. Stepien.

Folgherait is a sophomore integrated marketing communications major with sociology minor at Ithaca College.

In addition to the internship with Step One Creative, Folgherait is also the treasurer for the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) Ithaca College chapter, and a member of the Ithaca women’s lacrosse team.

“I’m so thankful and excited for the opportunity to intern with Step One Creative,” said Folgherait. “The hands-on experience in an office environment is invaluable when preparing to enter the workforce.”

OVIA Wins 2011 Golden Quote Award for Best Newsletter

Oswego, NY – Oswego Valley Insurance Agencies (OVIA) won a Golden Quotes Award recently in the Marketing/Public Relations Category for “Best Newsletter”, according to Chuck Harrington, OVIA President.

The awards show and dinner, which is presented annually by the Professional Journalists and Communicators of Oswego County (PJCOC) recognizes excellence in the county’s communication fields. This year the competition was held at Springside at Seneca Hill.

OVIA’s award-winning 2011 newsletter was developed in partnership with their marketing firm, Step One Creative. Oswego Little League To Hold Annual Spaghetti Dinner And Registration

OSWEGO, NY – Batter up! The 2011 baseball season for Oswego Little League is kicking off with the Annual Spaghetti Dinner and Player Registration to be held at the Oswego Elks Lodge on Feb. 15, from 5 to 9 p.m.

“We’re looking forward to the 56th season of Oswego Little League Baseball,” said Tim Murphy, president of Oswego Little League. “And, we hope our young players and their families will come out on February 15th to become a part of a wonderful tradition.”

According to Murphy, Oswego Little League offers seven divisions of organized youth baseball for all boys and girls, ages 5 through 16, including the Challenger Division, for players with special needs. Registration fees vary for each division: Challenger: $30, T-Ball/A: $40, AA: $60, AAA/Majors: $80, Jr/Sr: $90.  These fees are valid until March 1st.

Children residing within the boundaries of the Oswego City School District are eligible to register with Oswego Little League. Registrants are required to provide proof of age, verification of residence inside the League’s boundary, and provide a signed copy of the Medical Release form.

Volunteer forms are also available. Oswego Little League currently has a need for many new volunteers, to fill several positions of need. Managers, coaches and team parents are needed. League volunteers are also needed for concession, field maintenance, scorekeepers, and umpires.

The required forms and instructions are available now at www.oswegolittleleague.com, and may be filled out in advance, or at the registration tables on February 15th.

Spaghetti dinners will be available for eat in or take out. Dinners are priced at $8.00 for adults, and $6.00 for a child. Delivery of dinners may be arranged for groups that have to work that evening.  Pre-sale tickets are available from any Board Member.

There will be an additional opportunity to register in person on Saturday, February 19th, from 9:00 am until 1:00 pm, at the Oswego YMCA Armory Building.

Oswego Little League is a fun and safe environment for your children to learn and play baseball. Register by March 1st to reserve a roster spot.

CiTi Students Help Make Spirits Bright

With a focus on volunteer service, students at the Center for Instruction, Technology and Innovation recently donated their time doing a variety of tasks to benefit the community. The Exceptional Education program offered students a chance to volunteer by participating in activities such as making greeting cards, ringing the bell for the Salvation Army, making blankets and packing food boxes for those in need.

Fifth graders at Lura M. Sharp Elementary School in Pulaski wrote letters to Santa recently, but not to ask for presents for themselves. Their letters were selfless acts to help benefit the Central New York Chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation through the Macy’s “Believe” Campaign.
