Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month:
What Your Community Can Do to End Abuse Among Teens

February is National Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month. According to the Centers for Disease Control, one in three teens in the US is a victim of physical, emotional or sexual abuse from a dating partner. These violent relationships have serious consequences for victims – putting them at higher risk for substance abuse, eating disorders, risky sexual behavior, suicide and adult re-victimization.

Many teens and parents don’t realize that abuse refers to more than just physical violence. Emotional abuse and verbal abuse can leave scars that are more difficult to heal, and are often left unseen. Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month helps shed light on this epidemic.

In recognition of this important campaign, Services to Aid Families (SAF), a program of Oswego County Opportunities (OCO), will be a part of a nation-wide movement to celebrate Respect Week, held every year during the week of Valentine’s Day. During Respect Week, SAF is providing announcements to schools to read daily and post on their video screens. These announcements will educate youth and faculty about the staggering numbers of teens who deal with relationship abuse, types of controlling and abusive behaviors, and where individuals can go for help.

The Great White Way comes to Fulton

Not everyone can make the journey to “The Great White Way” to experience a Broadway show. Fortunately, every year the American Theatre Wing celebrates the year of theatre by presenting Awards to actors, costume designers, technical designers, directors, and the shows that are considered the best produced and performed that year. Antoinette Perry, a vital part of the American Theatre Wing for several years, is the namesake for the Award ceremony which began in 1947 shortly after her death.

This year CNY Arts Center will pay tribute to Tony Award winning musicals and the songs that made them famous with a Dessert Theatre series “A Night at the Tony’s.” Tony award-winning music paired with luscious desserts launch the 2016 season of Dessert Theatre February 13 directed by Nicholas Pike, making his directorial debut at CNY Arts Center.

“I chose “A Night at the Tony’s” for this year’s Dessert Series for several reasons,” said Pike. “Tony Award winning musicals have created staples within the world of Theatre whose songs have lasted decades. They are the most memorable, and most often the tunes that stay stuck in your head for hours. I hope the Tony’s appeal to generations both young and old will bring fresh faces both on stage and in the seats of the Center. And I’d simply like to share a night of Broadway’s history with Fulton.”

The popular tunes will include favorites from old classics such as South Pacific, Guys and Dolls, Kiss Me Kate alongside more recent shows like Rent, A Little Night Music, Hairspray and many more. Cast members include faces familiar to the local stages including Beth DeRousie, Amy C. Price, Nellica Rave Huff, Sabrina Woodward, Matthew Wood, Adam Schmidtmann, Marguerite Beebe, Michael Mankiewicz, and Kristin Cook. Gina Holsopple is Music Director and Jessica Dobrzynski is assisting with choreography.

The popular Dessert Theatre Series offers an unique evening out for dessert and a show at the Arts Center for one night only, Valentine’s weekend, February 13 at 8pm. Desserts are included in the admission price. The Arts Center is located at 11 River Glen Drive on the Cayuga College Fulton Campus.  Dessert Theatre will return July 16 and October 15 with Act 2 and Act 3 in the series celebrating the Tony’s. For more information, visit www.CNYArtsCenter.com or call 598-ARTS (2787).

A Night at the Tony’s featuring award-winning Broadway musicals and the songs that made them famous will be presented by CNY Arts Center one night only, February 13, 8 pm at 11 River Glen Drive on the Cayuga College Fulton Campus. The evening of song and dance will be paired with a buffet of desserts. For more information visit CNYArtsCenter.com or call 59-ARTS (2787)
