The top-ranked Oswego State men’s ice hockey team fell behind early and was never able to regroup as it fell to upstart Morrisville 5-2 on Saturday night at the Campus Center Arena. Paul Rodrigues and Justin Fox accounted for both Laker goals, but the Oswego State offense ran into a hot goaltender in the Mustangs’ Caylin Relkoff, who recorded 37 saves. The loss moved the Lakers to 20-3-0 overall and 13-1-0 in the SUNYAC standings, while Morrisville improved to 11-10-1 overall and 8-5-1 in the league.
Taylor Vince gave the Mustangs an early 1-0 lead at 5:45 when a slap shot from the blue line got through traffic in front of Oswego State goalie Paul Beckwith. Minutes later, Morrisville doubled its advantage when Tyler Swan’s shot from the right face-off circle went off of Beckwith’s glove into the back of the net. However, the Lakers cut the deficit in half with 27.8 seconds remaining in the first period when Fox got the puck at the left face-off circle. He forced Relkoff to commit to the puck before rocketing a pass through the crease to Rodrigues for the one-timer at the far post. Matt Singleton was also credited with an assist on the goal.
Oswego State appeared to have regained momentum in the second period after killing a 5-minute major penalty midway through the stanza, but shortly after the man-advantage ended Jamie Nelson’s shot trickled just inside the far post past Beckwith to put the Mustangs ahead 3-1.
Morrisville continued to click offensively in the third period as Nelson tapped in his second goal of the game after Nick Kulas fed him a pass as he came around the back of the net at 1:11.
However, the Mustangs were whistled for four penalties in 3:35 to give Oswego State several golden opportunities to get back into the game. The Lakers quickly got one of the goals back when Rodrigues sent a pass cross-ice to Fox, who was waiting for the one-timer at the left face-off that clanged off the right post at 4:14. Oswego State had several chances to score on the ensuing power plays, but Relkoff made the save or the shots went wide of the goal. Morrisville sealed the win at 12:02 in the frame with James Jarvis’ fifth goal of the season.
The Lakers finished the game 1-for-4 on the power play, while the Mustangs were 1-for-8. Oswego State’s Paul Beckwith suffered his first loss of the season between the pipes with 29 saves.
The loss marked the first time in eight all-time meetings that Oswego State lost to the Mustangs.
The Lakers wrap up the regular season next weekend when they host Brockport on Friday and Geneseo on Saturday. Both games are slated for 7 p.m.
