Pi Day: A Sweet Lesson For Math Students

OSWEGO – Students in Sarah Davis’ math classes at the Oswego Middle School recently learned education can be fun and delicious.

Seventh graders in Sarah Davis’ classroom participate in a no-hands pie-eating contest, in celebration of March 14 (3.14) as Pi Day.

Throughout the day, seventh and eighth grade students celebrated Pi Day, which is held on March 14 (3.14) in recognition of the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter, rounded at 3.14159.

While Pi represents a constant, its true number “has been calculated to over one trillion digits beyond its decimal point,” according to PiDay.org.

Several OMS students took on the challenge to recite as many numbers in Pi as they could, and the following students finished in first, second and third place, respectively: eighth grader Anna Cloonan with 203 digits, seventh grader David Pearson with 111 digits and eighth grader Miah Metott with 100 digits.

Additional fun activities included: Pi coloring sheets, various hands-on circumference and diameter activity stations and the popular no-hands pie-eating contest.

Winners of the miniature blueberry, pumpkin, appl and peach pie-eating contests included: seventh-graders Sheyenne Galt and Lucas Anzalone and eighth graders: Quentin Denkinberger, Haji Haji and Blake Uribe.

Davis was joined by her student teacher and former student, Kaylee Baldwin, in getting the students excited about math and learning. Davis said the fun-filled celebration was one of the most engaging days for her students, who are generally excited to learn math each school day.

Davis also reaffirmed her love of math and commitment to compete in the Pi digit reciting contest next year alongside her students.
