Survival Bowl Weaving Class Offered at Amboy 4-H Environmental Education Center

AMBOY – Cornell Cooperative Extension of Oswego County is pleased to once again offer basket weaving at the Amboy 4-H Environmental Education Center. On June 22, beginning at 9:30 a.m., Linda Scherz will lead a hands-on workshop in basket weaving.

Learn to weave this Survival Bowl made from paracord at the Amboy 4-H Environmental Education Center.

Scherz has been creating baskets since her first 6” melon basket in the late 1980s. Little did she know how that first basket would change her life.

Her love of weaving quickly expanded to designing, teaching, exhibiting, and entering juried shows. In 1990 she opened a shop, Adirondack Basketry, in her home, has branched out to work with an artists’ co-op selling her baskets, and in 2004 added an online shop.

Scherz teaches throughout the eastern United States for various guilds, conferences, art centers, and organization, and enjoys sharing her basketry knowledge and experience with others.

During this workshop, program participants will weave survival paracord onto a 4” solid wood base with pre-glued spokes, creating a survival bowl measuring almost 5” high opening to 7½” diameter, and learning many techniques as they twine. The bowl will be completed with a lashed-on rim accented with paracord rim filler.

There will be a selection of colors for students to choose from. This bowl can be unwoven and used in case of emergency, as it is made with survival paracord.

The fee for this all-day workshop is $76 per person which includes all materials, prep, pattern and tool use during class to complete the basket. Participants should bring their own lunch and beverages. Paid registration in advance is required as space is limited. Registration closes at 4 p.m. on June 7.

To register for this program, please contact the 4-H Office at Cornell Cooperative Extension of Oswego at 315-963-7286 before mailing the program fee.
