A First Time Event Becomes the ‘Talk of the Town’ – ’12 Years a Slave’ Attracts Hundreds


The Oswego Sunrise Rotary Club, Friends of the Library, and Oswego High School Interact Club partnered recently on a “Dinner and a Movie” event at the Lake Ontario Event and Conference Center in Oswego.

The sold-out event featured a buffet-style dinner, guest speakers and a showing of 12 Years a Slave, a film that captured the 2013 Academy Award for Best Picture.
The event’s two guest speakers, Richard Linzy and Dr. Joseph Sgarlata spoke about Northup and the film 12 Years a Slave prior to the film presentation.

Linzy, a direct descendant of Northup, and current assistant principal at Corcoran High School, spoke briefly about his great-great-great-great-grandfather and how it was an honor to have the film and Northup showcased in Oswego.

“We greatly appreciated the collaboration with the Friends of the Library and Oswego High School Interact Club, said Lisa Shaw, president of the Oswego Sunrise Rotary Club. “It was a wonderful evening, in a perfect setting, and we want to extend our thanks to George Broadwell, Jr., his staff and everyone at the Lake Ontario Event and Conference Center.”

According to Shaw, the Oswego Sunrise Rotary Club hopes to present another successful event in 2015.
