When Fulton’s Curves franchised exercise shop for women closed last year, it left a hole that a couple of its former employees are eager to fill.
Veronica LaBarge and Christine Krugman opened All In One Fitness & Beauty in a formerly vacant storefront on Fulton’s West 1st St. earlier this year. Their goal: recapture the feeling that made Curves a place women wanted to be, while offering more of what women want and need for their health and well being.
“We enjoyed the ladies and they trusted us,” said Krugman. “That’s why they followed us here.”
But the pair didn’t open a clone of Curves, famous for its fast circuit of 13 exercise machines. “We asked the women what else they would like to do besides the circuit,” said Krugman.
So All In One features weight lifting stations, for example. It also reaches beyond exercise, offering a massage therapist and facials, as well as a coffee and tea bar where people can enjoy a good chat after working out.
“We built the bar to help people relax,” said LaBarge. “Days are stressful now. At least here, they can come and laugh and get on with their day.”
The business is meeting its membership goals, the owners said. Every week, a few more people join. LaBarge said there is demand from some men to join as well.
And they point to success stories among their members. “We’ve seen breakthroughs,” LaBarge said. “An 80 year old woman was visiting the area for a month and came here. Her first couple of weeks, she had to be helped but after that, she was on her own.”
The pair hope to build in more services for women, including a space for parties.
