ALTMAR, NY – Hardy anglers will compete for cash prizes for the largest steelhead and brown trout during the sixth annual Catch and Release Winter Steelhead Tournament Saturday, Jan. 29 on the Salmon River. The event is sponsored by Salmon Heaven Lodge and Salmon River Outfitters.
All anglers will receive a hot roast beef dinner and guided drift boat trip on the Salmon River. Prizes will be awarded for the two largest steelhead (measured length and girth) and the largest brown trout.
Capt. Harry Powers of Salmon Heaven Lodge says there are “no snow dates, no rain dates and no sissies” involved.
“Every participant will be randomly paired with another angler and together they will draw the name of a guide from a hat,” said Powers. “They will both have the assistance of the guide for the tournament. Although the guide cannot ‘hook and hand,’ they will share their expertise, equipment, ‘secret’ flies, and help net the fish. The guide will also be responsible to measure and release the fish as quickly as possible.”
Competition will include all of the Salmon River from the Altmar bridge to Lake Ontario. The fly zones and tributaries of the Salmon River are off limits.
Registration is $150 per person. The tournament is limited to 20 anglers and registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Participants must attend a rules meeting after dinner at 7 p.m. at Salmon River Outfitters Friday, Jan. 28. Registration deadline is Thursday, Jan. 27.
