April is Nurse Practitioner Month

Nurse practitioners (NP’s) are advance practice nurses who provide high quality health care services. In today’s health care world, they are mainstream providers found in both primary and specialty care. NP’s serve as primary health care providers for you and your family by diagnosing, treating, and prescribing across a wide range of health problems taking a holistic approach to patient care. NP’s assist their patients in making health decisions by focusing on health promotion, education, counseling , disease prevention, listening to concerns, working with you to achieve and maintain good health, and carefully explaining your health care options to provide the appropriate diagnosis and treatment. Services by NP’s are covered by most insurance plans. NP’s are able to work independently in collaboration with other health care professionals.

NP’s must have advanced education and clinical training to practice, and must maintain their certification and licenses on an on-going basis. NP’s can be found in a variety of health care settings, private practice; Community health centers; Business and industry health centers; Occupational Health offices; Nursing homes; Hospices; Public Health departments; Schools; Military and VA facilities and many more locations.
