Students enrolled in the Altmar-Parish-Williamstown Central School District’s Extended School Year program and students participating in the district’s Summer Rebel Club program marked the end of their respective six-week summer programs with a joint celebration of Olympic proportions.
Students were joined together and organized into teams with each team selecting to represent one country for the two-day celebration.
The countries of Mexico, Italy, Canada, Japan, Ireland and the United States were represented, each marching into the opening ceremony wearing artfully prepared team t-shirts and carrying banners and flags that were a demonstration their team pride and spirit.
The “lighting” of a mock-Olympic torch, made from a cardboard tube and colorful paper, took place and signaled the official kick-off to a series of fun-filled challenges for the students. Vying for bragging rights and a chance for a medal, each challenge was designed to encourage team work and promote cooperative problem solving.
The 2012 Extended School Year program at APW served students from elementary through high school while the Rebel Club program was a continuation of the school-year Rebel Club program that is offered at APW in cooperation with the YMCA and through the district’s 21st Century Grant.
