A recent Parent Information Night on ensuring self-esteem for children with disabilities, presented by ARC of Oswego County, was a great success.
Parents and caregivers of children with disabilities gathered to learn how to help children to establish a healthy sense of self. Kathy O’Connell, an author and director of Radiant Abilities, LLC, was the featured speaker.
O’Connell’s life and work are entwined, as she was born with cerebral palsy. Her presentation offered an opportunity to learn and discuss ways to assist a child in developing an awareness of self; help a child to develop healthy boundaries; actively join the child in the recognition of his/her potential; and help a child find meaning in his/her disability.
No less encouraging to parents was the example of O’Connell herself, who credits her parents for holding her to similar standards as her nondisabled siblings and encouraging her to find success in her own life.
An Upstate New York resident, O’Connell is a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor, Licensed Mental Health Counselor, Clinical Hypnotherapist, Certified Core Energetics Therapist and Breath Therapist with degrees from Le Moyne College and Syracuse University.
