OSWEGO, NY – State Sen. Darrel J. Aubertine joined board members and community residents at the Oswego YMCA Armory today (Oct. 22) to tour completed renovations and future projects that have been made possible by a $40,000 grant secured by the Senator this year.
“The YMCA is a great facility and is certainly necessary for any community. It provides a place to come together for recreation and education with friends and neighbors,” Sen. Aubertine said. “Before we were able to get them the funding they needed there were serious infrastructure and maintenance concerns. I made it a priority of mine to ensure this funding came through so the community could continue to enjoy the benefits of the organization.”
The grant has been put to use in several resourceful ways, particularly as means to offset costs associated with essential building maintenance and repair work of the facilities, including resealing the gymnasium floor, repairing the copper roof damaged two years ago and repairing windows that were in dire need of care.
“Here at the Y, we’re for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility,” said Deana Masuicca, executive director Oswego YMCA-Armory. “We’re very thankful that Darrel as able to secure this funding for us, as it has preserved a historic building and has allowed our community to continue participating in our programs now and in the future.”
Moving forward, the YMCA is looking use the grant to replace an exterior door and bricks in the chimney that are deteriorating and also re-cover tiling in a community room.
“We’re deeply appreciative of Darrel’s efforts in helping us secure grants and funding for the Armory on a continuous basis,” said David Roman, pPresident of the board, Oswego YMCA.
“It’s great to have Darrel’s support in the process of improving the Y for our community,” said John Fitzgibbons, past president and current board member, Oswego YMCA. “The senator’s commitment throughout the entire process reflects his strong interest in improving life for those in our community.”
The Armory provides a variety of programs for more than 2,300 members and Oswego community, including a fitness center, gymnasium, enrichment program, kid’s fitness arcade and a youth center.
