Barclay Applauds Synthetic Marijuana Ban Today by Health Department

Assemblyman Will Barclay (R,C,I-Pulaski), a leader in the movement to ban synthetic marijuana statewide, welcomed the news today that Governor Cuomo has ordered the state Health Department to ban the statewide sale and distribution of these dangerous drugs.

“I am pleased that Governor Cuomo and the Health Department have taken a strong stance and banned the sale and distribution of synthetic marijuana,” said Barclay. “This harmful drug has been a threat to the safety and well-being of our children for too long and I am glad that our youth will no longer be legally exposed to its dangerous effects.  I am looking forward to working with the Governor and my colleagues in the Assembly on legislation that will end the sale of these products.”

Barclay introduced legislation in January, proposing to prohibit the sale and distribution of chemical compounds that mimic the effects of marijuana.  A petition was also launched to gain support for the legislation.

“I heard from a number of parents, public health workers, public officials, emergency attendants, about their concerns of the dangers of these drugs.  I believe our collective voices were made clear to make this ban a reality.” said Barclay.

On Monday, the New York State Health Department sent alerts to healthcare providers, emergency departments, and county health departments across the state, warning the dangers of synthetic marijuana.

Barclay said at that time, this is a clear indication that our laws need to change to ban these substances.
