BREWERTON, NY – Billy Decker might have started on the pole position after some tough finishes in prior weeks, but he had a hard fought win Friday night at the Brewerton Speedway. Decker had a spirited battle through most of the 35 lap Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modified feature with Alan Johnson and then held off teammate Pat Ward over the last 10 laps for the victory.
For Decker and his Gypsum Wholesalers, Stadium International Trucks, Integra Racing Shocks, No.91, Bicknell Team, it was win 48 at the Brewerton Speedway.
Other winners on Syracuse Haulers night were, Kevan Cook Nationwide Insurance IMCA Modifieds, Josh Desantis Jr. Beaver River Distribution ESDCA Mod Lites and Jim Money took the win in the Metalico Four Cylinder Super Stocks.
Billy Decker and Tony Steiner led the stout 25 car field down to the green with Decker grabbing the early advantage in the 35 lap Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modified feature.
With 5 laps complete Decker still set the pace as Mike Mahaney and Alan Johnson gave chase keeping the leader in sight. Pat O’Brien and Chad Phelps showed in the top-five.
By lap 10 Decker still led using the top of the speedway, but at this point Johnson had moved into second and started narrowing Decker’s advantage with Pat Ward and O’Brien still in contention.
On lap 13 Johnson, running the bottom was able to grab the lead from Decker when Decker slipped out of the groove in four.
From lap 13 on, Johnson and Decker put on a show not only battling for the win, but racing heavy traffic trying to put cars a lap down. Pat Ward was right there waiting for any mistake by the top-two.
On lap 20 Decker was able to retake the lead by a narrow margin.
The difference in the race came with 10 laps to go when a quick yellow flew slowing the intense pace and race the top-runners were putting on for the fans.
Once the green came back out Decker running the bottom he was able to out run teammate Pat Ward to the checkers, winning by just over one-second. Alan Johnson, Jimmy Phelps and Ryan Phelps rounded out the top-five.
“I was as nervous as I have been in a longtime starting on the pole. That’s just a sign of the three prior weeks we had to this,” Decker said about the poor finishes he had that led to his starting position Friday night.
“Things were going good till I got in lapped traffic when the one guy got a little messed up in one and two. I hit the brakes hard and stalled the motor, I didn’t know if I was going to get it going. Then I tried the outside and Alan (Johnson) went underneath me. We all know what a tough guy he is. I got lucky when a lapped car messed him up and I was able to get the Gypsum Wholesalers car back by him.”
Decker also related that the track was a little tighter than usual and super fast and running the bottom was where all the traction was and running down there was the key to his win.
In the 20 lap Nationwide Insurance IMCA Modified feature Jim Walsh led the opening 11 laps before Kevan Cook was able to get by for the lead. Once in the lead Cook cruised to the win that was only slowed by only one caution. Walsh, Rob Keller, Chris Fleming and Ryan Scott rounded out the top-five.
In victory lane Cook thanked friends and fellow racers who helped him get his car back together after a bad wreck at another speedway that put the rest of his season in doubt.
Jeff Blackburn led the first 13 laps of the 20 lap Beaver River Distribution ESDCA Moid Lite feature before Josh Desantis Jr. took over the lead. Once in the lead Desantis ran a flawless race holding off veteran Jeff Isabell for his first ever win. Tim Devendorf, Joe Garafolo and Jeff Blackburn rounded out the top-five.
Doug Elkins looked like he might be heading for his first win in the 15 lap Metalico Four Cylinder Super Stock feature till he suddenly slowed on lap 7 handing the lead over to Chuck Powelczyk. Powelczyk and Jim Money battled nose to tail and side by side with Money grabbing the lead and the win on the final lap in turns three and four. Powelczyk, Keith Shay, Claude Hutchings Jr. and Wendall Washington rounded out the top-five.
