Birdlebough Students Earn ‘It takes a Village’ Award

PHOENIX – When Advance Media New York put out the call for nominations for its 2019 Young & Amazing Awards, one Phoenix Central School District parent knew a group that fit the bill.

On behalf of the John C. Birdlebough High School Student Council, student representative Jonathan Dion and Principal Thomas Bailer are all smiles as they collect the “It Takes a Village” award.

Sheila Dion nominated the John C. Birdlebough High School Student Council Leadership Organization for the “It takes a Village” award.

The honor recognizes groups that have done something great in their community and the PCSD leadership team met the criteria as they volunteer and raise money and awareness for various causes.

They received the award, along with a $500 scholarship, during a ceremony on Thursday  March 7 at the Everson Museum in Syracuse.

“They find joy in giving back, and at the end of the day, that is what it is all about,” said Tim Kennedy, president of award sponsor Advance Media New York.

According to JCB Student Council adviser Lisa Spereno, the award was a true team effort and the students deserved the recognition for their ongoing contributions to the Phoenix area.

“We have an outstanding group of young people in our community, and the tireless efforts of Cathy Lee, our community volunteer liaison, along with the dedication of our Student Council creates a true climate of family and service,” Spereno said, noting that she was grateful to Dion for nominating the organization. “It is an honor to receive an award which shines light on the value of the many who come together to create such opportunities. Phoenix is truly a phenomenal ‘village’ to be a part of.”
